Landscape and trails in Pantenburg

Pantenburg is in the southern Vulkaneifel. Several well-known maar lakes are within about ten kilometres, and the local landscape is suitable for hiking. If you want to focus your stay on nature and outdoor activities, these features provide a clear sense of the area: maar lakes nearby and hiking in the countryside.

The Maare-Mosel Cycle Route passes through Pantenburg and follows the former Wittlich–Daun railway line there. In addition to the cycle route, there are also hiking trails in the area. Cycling on a named route and hiking are therefore different ways to plan a stay. Before setting out, it is worth checking the current route conditions.

Local character and type of accommodation

The former Franciscan monastery in Buchholz lies opposite Pantenburg, is part of the locality and houses holiday apartments. This type of accommodation differs from a hotel. If you are considering a holiday apartment, please check current availability.

Bernkastel-Wittlich as the wider destination

The wider destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich brings together the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the HunsrĂĽck, with its abundance of forests and meadows. The Erbeskopf is also among the nature and activity highlights of this broader area: the 816-metre-high mountain invites visitors to hike and offers a wide range of winter sports.

At the Erbeskopf, the National Park Gate provides information about nature and the environment. Its interactive multimedia exhibition focuses on forests and moors. The Erbeskopf thus combines sporting activities with a distinct nature and environmental theme within the wider destination.

The Manderscheid Castle Trail is also part of the wider destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich. This moderately difficult circular hiking route goes around the castles of Manderscheid, is 5.4 kilometres long and is listed as taking two hours. While the Erbeskopf generally invites visitors to hike, the Castle Trail has specific details for a circular route. The via ferrata in Manderscheid comprises three sections around the two castles and is about four kilometres long in total, one kilometre of which is secured with cables. The multi-section via ferrata and the moderately difficult circular hiking route described above therefore offer different route profiles.

The Maare-Mosel Cycle Route, which passes through Pantenburg, is also part of the 58.5-kilometre route from Daun to Bernkastel-Kues in the wider destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich. It follows a disused railway line. This makes it possible to view the section through Pantenburg and the longer connection as two scales of the same cycle route.

The pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen is part of the cultural history of the wider destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich. It was consecrated in 1502, and Klausen continues to be a destination for pilgrims every year. Here, a consecration with a recorded date goes hand in hand with an ongoing annual pilgrimage tradition.
