Discover Malborn
Accommodation in Malborn
Malborn can be explored from two perspectives: its location in protected natural areas and its traces of church, pilgrimage and charcoal-burning history. The municipality is a national park municipality in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and lies entirely within the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. Its built-up areas lie directly beside the core zone. The municipality also promotes walks in and around Malborn. When choosing where to go, you can therefore draw on both natural features and historical traces for guidance.
Landscape and water around Malborn
The springs of the Kleine and Große Prims are in the forest of Malborn. The rivers converge near Thiergarten; close to Nonnweiler, they are dammed at the Primstalsperre reservoir. The springs are therefore in Malborn, while the confluence and reservoir are other points of interest in the surrounding area. Wild daffodils bloom every spring where the two Prims rivers meet near Thiergarten. The intensity of the bloom varies from year to year.
Malborn’s local landmark is Steinkopf, its 683.3-metre-high mountain. The municipality promotes walks in and around Malborn, and scenic hiking destinations can be reached from the village. Information about Thiergarten provides additional orientation in the area: the village is on the Hunsrückhöhenstraße between Hermeskeil and Thalfang and is 5.5 kilometres from the Reinsfeld junction on the A1.
Churches and traces of history
The Catholic Church of St. Brixius was built in 1806. Its west portal comes from St. Anne’s Chapel in Trier. The Marienkapelle offers a different perspective: it is privately maintained, open to visitors and was most recently comprehensively renovated in 2021. In nearby Thiergarten, the Marienkirche has 14 small, colourful windows connected to the rose window above the altar.
Smaller historic features add to the picture. A wayside cross in Malborn is a shaft cross in simple neoclassical forms. The former charcoal burner’s site is associated with the historic production of charcoal from wood. These traces are distinct: the church and chapel represent sacred architectural history, the cross a simple form of wayside-cross design, and the charcoal burner’s site earlier charcoal production.
The nearby St. Nicholas Spring is part of the area’s pilgrimage history. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims travelling to the All Saints Chapel in Wüstenbrühl stopped there to rest. At the time, the spring water was thought to have healing properties and to be of exceptional quality.
