Erden: Vineyards, Trails and Roman Wine Press
Accommodation in Erden
Erden offers several clear points of interest when choosing a destination: the vineyards of Erdener Treppchen, trails through the vines and across the heights above the Moselle, and historic reminders of the region’s wine and village history. The area offers a range of attractions. The wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination brings together the romantic Moselle Valley, the volcanic Eifel and the Hunsrück, rich in forests and meadows. The 816-metre-high Erbeskopf offers hiking opportunities and a variety of winter sports. The National Park Gate at Erbeskopf provides information about nature and the environment and features an interactive exhibition focusing on forests and moors.
Vineyards and trails around Erden
The Erdener Kletterweg trail runs through the Erdener Treppchen and Erdener Prälat vineyard sites. Its climbing sections offer views across the Moselle Valley; the vines in Erdener Treppchen grow on steep slate slopes opposite Erden. The vineyard landscape and valley views are equally part of the trail.
Breeding areas for eagle owls and kestrels border the climbing trail; opportunities to spot these birds vary by season. The area is considered the northernmost range of the rock bunting.
Even away from the climbing trail, walking and hiking routes lead from Erden through the vineyards and up to the heights above the Moselle. Two stages of the Moselsteig Trail are nearby. A signposted access trail starts at the Erden–Lösnich bridge, passes through Erdener Treppchen and connects Erden with the Moselsteig Trail. The bridge also provides access to the opposite side of the Moselle.
Those interested in vineyard sites and culture will also find the Roman Wine Press in Erden listed among the sights on the Moselhöhenradweg wine-region circular route.
Roman wine press and village history
The Roman wine press in Erdener Treppchen was discovered and excavated during land consolidation work. It can be visited year-round; guided tours are available by arrangement. A restored tree press also stands on Hermann-Schwaab-Platz. It uses pressing technology that was already employed in Roman times.
The village church was completed in 1720. Its stone high altar retable, dating from 1654, is considered an early Baroque work of art. Wall paintings in a chapel depict scenes of the martyrdoms of Thyrsus and Boniface. The chapel is a popular stop for pilgrims and hikers travelling along the Moselle or around Erden.
Village views and places to eat
Erden’s village character is shaped by half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, winding lanes and romantic courtyards. These village views offer a distinct contrast to the steep vineyard sites and trails leading up to the heights.
The Treppchenblick fountain is fed by spring water, which flows into a nearby biotope. The Campingschänke at Erden campsite is right on the banks of the Moselle and serves regional dishes and Moselle wine. As dining options may change, it is advisable to check what is currently available before visiting.
