Bettenfeld is situated on a plateau in a striking volcanic landscape. Crater lakes, visible traces of past eruptions, and hiking trails are defining features of a stay here. If you are looking for a hotel in Bettenfeld, you can plan your outings around two main themes: geological outcrops and the habitats surrounding the maars. The destinations differ in whether you want to see a single geological feature or connect several points in the landscape on a hike.

Volcanic Traces on the Mosenberg

The Mosenberg reaches 519 metres and is considered the last active volcano in the Eifel. It is a group of five cinder cones. An earlier lava flow remains visible in the Horngraben. At the Mosenberg Volcano Experience Park, a large cross-section through a volcanic cone is exposed, where you can see feeder channels, lava layers, and cinders. The park focuses on the structure of a volcanic cone, while the lava flow in the Horngraben shows a different geological trace. Groups can use the Mosenberg Biological-Ecological Station for research or teaching on limnological, geological, plant sociological, or other field ecology topics, by prior reservation.

Crater Lake, Dry Maar, and Nature Reserve

Windsborn is considered the only true crater lake north of the Alps. Rare plants and endangered dragonflies live along its shores. Swimming and fishing are prohibited at Windsborn. Hinkelsmaar differs from the crater lake in that it is a dry maar; it is also home to rare animal and plant species. The Mosenberg Crater Group Nature Reserve covers around 62 hectares within Bettenfeld and includes Mosenberg, Windsbornmaar, and Hinkelmaar. Here, striking volcanic landforms meet distinctive habitats.

Hiking Trails and Views

The approximately five-kilometre-long Heimatspur Kraterseen Mosenberg trail runs around Windsborn Crater Lake and connects it with Hinkelsmaar and Bettenfeld Volcano Experience Park. The route is suitable for families. It is a good option if you want to connect several of the landscape features mentioned above on a circular walk; the park can also be the main focus as a single geological destination. From the Hinkelsmaar/Kratersee car park, it takes about 20 minutes to walk to Mosenberg Volcano Experience Park. This time estimate refers to the walk from the car park; the Heimatspur trail itself is around five kilometres long.
