For trip planning, Dalberg can be considered primarily in terms of two themes: the history of Dalburg Castle and St. Leonard’s Chapel, and hiking trails that pass through the village. If you’re looking for a hotel in Dalberg, these highlights can help you decide where to stay: would you like your trip to focus more on historical sights or on getting outdoors on foot? Dalberg lies on the southern edge of Soonwald Nature Park, in the Gräfenbach Valley region. Its landscape is characterized by forests, meadows and vineyards.

Dalburg Castle and the Chapel: Two Historic Sites

Dalburg Castle was built around 1150 by Godebold von Weyersbach. It was not destroyed in a war, but was used as a quarry in the 19th century and fell into disrepair afterward. As a Ganerbenburg, or jointly held castle, it was a place where several families of the same lineage lived at the same time. The term thus refers to shared use by different families, not to a single lord of the castle.

St. Leonard’s Chapel was built around 1485, probably as a foundation by Johann von Dalberg, and is dedicated to Saint Leonard. The murals in the choir were uncovered in the early 19th century and date from the time the chapel was built. The scenes depicted include a Madonna standing with the Christ Child on a crescent moon. Other paintings show Saint Leonard with prisoners and with a model of a church. Those interested in the chapel will therefore find both an image of the Virgin Mary and depictions of the patron saint whose name it bears.

Hiking Trails with Different Landmarks

The Panorama Trail is a circular route around the two municipalities of Spabrücken and Dalberg. Starting at the church in Dalberg, you’ll reach the panoramic viewpoint after about 600 meters; the trail then leads to Dalburg Castle, a place to stop and rest. The approximately 600 meters refers to the stretch to the viewpoint, not the total length of the circular route.

Two longer trails also pass through Dalberg or by its historic sites. The approximately 85-kilometer Mosel-Nahe Hiking Trail passes through Dalberg on its way to Bad Kreuznach. For the Nahe Heights Trail, the section between Bad Sobernheim and Spabrücken is described: it leads through Dalberg and Dalburg Castle. The details therefore differ depending on what you need for planning: the Panorama Trail highlights a waypoint after around 600 meters, while the other two trails are described in terms of their longer routes.

Cycling Route and Road Connections

The Kleinbahn Cycle Loop runs mostly on paved farm roads; shorter sections use district and state roads. This mix of road types is a useful point of reference when choosing a route. You can take it into account alongside the hiking trails without treating the different routes as one combined route.

The L239 and K40 run through Dalberg. The A61 is about 10 road kilometers away, and the B41 about 8. Check the current route before setting out, as road distances may vary depending on the route planner.

A Place to Eat at the Foot of Dalburg Castle

Gasthaus St. Hubertus is located at the foot of Dalburg Castle on the L239, which connects the Nahe Valley with the Soonwald. Parking is available opposite. The inn serves traditional German cuisine in a rustic setting. Opening and parking information may change; check before visiting. For trip planning, the inn is another local point of reference alongside the castle, chapel and hiking trails.
