If you are looking for a hotel in Bockenau, a visit to the Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum can be a highlight of your stay. The wider Bad Kreuznach destination offers further cultural and leisure attractions in several places, including Bad Kreuznach, Bretzenheim, Windesheim and Bad Sobernheim. This lets you distinguish Bockenau’s railway focus from other themes such as architectural history, museum culture and outdoor recreation.

Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum: Local Railway History

At the southern entrance to Bockenau, the Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum displays two Krauss-Maffei narrow-gauge steam locomotives, a restored carriage, a crossing keeper’s hut and an original semaphore signal mast. The exhibits are connected with the former Kreuznach narrow-gauge railway, which ran between Winterburg and Bad Kreuznach from 1896 to 1936. The outdoor railway exhibits are accessible at any time. Check visitor information before your visit, especially if you would like to see the photo exhibition. From the museum, the Bockenau Friedhof bus stop is 350 metres away, and the Mainzer Straße stop is 600 metres away.

Cultural Attractions in the Wider Bad Kreuznach Destination

Bridge Houses and Museums

The bridge houses in Bad Kreuznach were built from 1480 onward because of a lack of space. The half-timbered buildings stand on pillars of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300. Since 1985/86, the museums of the city of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the listed former Bangert manor in a historic park. Bad Kreuznach therefore brings together two distinct cultural and historical themes: bridge architecture and a former manor as a museum site.

Rock Hermitage and Organ Museum

The Rock Hermitage in Bretzenheim is carved entirely into the rock. It was probably established as a place of worship in prehistoric times and repurposed in the early Christian period. It can be viewed from the outside year-round, without a guide; access to the rock dwelling is currently not possible because of a rockfall. Windesheim is home to the orgel ART Museum, a musical instrument museum that is unique of its kind in Germany.

Leisure and Landscape

In Bad Sobernheim, the barefoot path is a summer leisure attraction. The 3.5-kilometre walking trail leads to the Nahe River and includes a clay-treading pool, a skills course and various types of ground surface. For directions to another destination in Bad Sobernheim: the walking route from the station to the Rhineland-Palatinate Open-Air Museum is signposted and takes about 25 minutes.

The Hahnenbachtal Tour in the Kirner Land is certified as a Dream Loop. In the “Germany’s Most Beautiful Hiking Trails” competition, it won first place in the day hikes category in 2012. The Salinental valley between Bad Kreuznach and Bad Münster is a unique cultural landscape with a rich history. These diverse landscape and hiking themes complement the wider destination’s architectural and museum history without being attributed to Bockenau itself.

Travel Planning Information

Tourist information offices in the municipal associations and towns in the district, as well as Naheland Touristik in Kirn, provide visitors with information about stays, accommodation and bookings. Their topics also include leisure activities, wellness, and wine and dining in the Naheland. This gives you guidance both for planning accommodation and for exploring other interests in the wider Bad Kreuznach destination.
