Oberlahr: St. Anthony, Sound Trail and Wied Trail
Accommodation in Oberlahr
In the centre of Oberlahr, the church square and the parish church of St. Anthony are part of the village’s character; the church is a landmark of the community. Historic buildings and parish traditions sit alongside paths with different points of interest. The Sound Trail combines wooden instruments with a circular route, while Wied Trail 04 runs through the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park. In Oberlahr, architectural history, annual events and nature experiences thus come together.
The church and local architectural history
The present Catholic Parish Church of St. Anthony in Oberlahr was built between 1874 and 1876. An earlier church already stood in Oberlahr around 1200; it was demolished around 1848 to make way for a larger replacement. The present church contains a small crypt, known as the lower church. Also preserved are a kneeler dating from 1695 and a baptismal font from the 13th century. Both furnishings survived renovation work. Their dates predate the construction of the present church and give the interior furnishings their own historical timeframe.
Another dated chapter in the local building history is the “Lahrer Herrlichkeit” primary school. Its foundation stone was laid on 7 May 1861, and the building was completed in 1862. The laying of the foundation stone and the completion mark two different points in the building’s history. Together with the dates relating to the parish church, they show that local architectural history is not limited to a single building or era.
Parish traditions throughout the year
Two events with distinctly different times of year are among the recurring parish traditions. The Kirmes takes place in January, on the weekend after the patron saint’s feast day. The parish festival is celebrated at the end of August or beginning of September. The dates are therefore far apart in the annual calendar: one in winter, the other towards the end of summer. If you would like to plan your visit around either festival, check the specific dates locally in advance.
The Sound Trail and Wied Trail: different walking experiences
The Sound Trail associated with Oberlahr is a 5.4-kilometre circular route. Wooden instruments turn the forest into an interactive experience and are intended to encourage an active, sensory engagement with the surroundings. The marked path runs from Rott to Oberlahr along meadows and forest tracks. Its length and circular layout provide a clear basis for choosing a route; if you are planning a walk, check the route, length and current markings again. Individual installations may change. The entire Sound Trail is suitable for an all-terrain pushchair; however, actual accessibility depends on trail conditions and current maintenance.
Wied Trail 04 has a different landscape focus. The route runs through the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park, alternating between riverside meadows and wooded heights. At the Oberlahr end, the trail reaches half-timbered houses and the parish church of St. Anthony on the village square. Compared with the Sound Trail, whose character is defined by the wooden instruments and circular route, the Wied Trail focuses on changing landscapes and a specific destination in Oberlahr. The two descriptions therefore offer different ways to choose a path based on its character.
