Mehren: Half-Timbered Houses, Village History and Trails
Accommodation in Mehren
Mehren combines a protected half-timbered historic center with historic buildings and local trail connections. The church, Bulles’Je and the Old School represent different chapters in the village’s history; the village hike and the walk around the church each offer a distinct focus. Other attractions include the open-air theater, the parish barn and recurring events.
Half-Timbered Houses and Architectural History
The three-aisled basilica was built around 1200 and later had a half-timbered upper story added. It stands on elevated ground and overlooks the historic half-timbered village center. The center is protected as a historic district; guided tours of the protected village center are available.
Mehren is considered one of the most beautiful half-timbered villages in Rhineland-Palatinate. The half-timbered character is evident beyond the village center: the basilica also had a half-timbered upper story added later. This brings together the protected village ensemble and a church building with an additional half-timbered structure in the village’s appearance.
Another historic building is Bulles’Je, a former dungeon dating from 1547. It is privately owned, but unlocked for visitors during the day. As access information may change, check before your visit.
Village Walks and Hiking Connections
The village hike in Mehren has 19 stops and begins at Bulles’Je, the building dating from 1547. The walk around the church leads to the Old School, which was also built in 1547. On the village hike, the sequence of stops shapes the route; on the walk around the church, the Old School is the named destination. The two local routes therefore differ in the way they are described and oriented.
Mehren lies in a side valley of the Wied. Hikers approach the village on the WesterwaldSteig stage from Weyerbusch to Flammersfeld. Official Tour 1 also indicates the way to Mehren. Check current route information and trail conditions before setting out.
Open-Air Theater and Events
The open-air theater stands below the church, beside the village pond. It was built in 1986 in the Greco-Roman style, modeled on the ancient theater at Ephesus. The venue is used for open-air events and concerts. Its design and use offer two distinct points of reference: the ancient theater form and the events program.
The parish barn is also used for events. Mehren’s Festival of Lights is organized by local associations and is a recurring tradition. Specific event dates may vary, so check the dates for your travel period separately.
More Perspectives in the Wider Destination of Altenkirchen
The wider destination of Altenkirchen also encompasses distinct historical and landscape connections. In Marienthal, the Klosterdorfweg (Monastery Village Trail) circles the former Franciscan monastery through the shaded Kurwald forest of the Archdiocese of Cologne. Marienthal remains a popular pilgrimage site today. In Flammersfeld, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen founded the “Flammersfelder Hülfsverein zur Unterstützung unbemittelter Landwirthe” in 1849, the world’s first credit union. The places represent different regional themes: a monastery-related trail in Marienthal and Raiffeisen’s founding history in Flammersfeld.
