If you are looking for a hotel in Friesenhagen, historic buildings and regional trails can help you decide on a destination. The sights range from Wildenburg’s elevated location and the water-castle architecture of Schloss Crottorf to chapels and regional routes. You can plan your stay around your own interests: architectural history, historical names, architecture or cycling each offer a different perspective.

Wildenburg: Elevated Location and History

Wildenburg stands on a mountain spur above the Wiesental valley. Its keep is more than 25 metres high and topped with a Baroque cupola. The location and building design offer two different points of reference for viewing the complex: its relationship to the Wiesental valley and the tower’s distinctive design. Historically, Wildenburg was the main seat of the Lords of Wildenburg. Gerhard von Arenberg was also connected with Wildenburg and referred to himself in 1239 as “Gerardus de Wildenberg”. The building’s form and a specifically dated connection to its lordship thus sit side by side.

Crottorf and the Chapels

Schloss Crottorf is described as the only water-castle complex of its kind in the northeast of Rhineland-Palatinate and as one of the best-preserved water castles in the Rhineland. Crottorf was first mentioned in 1144 as “Crutorp”. This early record of the name adds a historical time marker to the architectural perspective. The chapels offer an opportunity to compare their construction dates and attributions: St. Anne’s Chapel was built by Franciscan monks in the 17th century. It is also known locally as the Red Chapel and stands at a site associated with the history of the witch trials at Wildenburg. Rochus Chapel was probably built by Franciscans in the 17th century. It has a square, plastered rubble-stone structure and a Welsch dome. The attribution of this chapel to the Franciscans remains probable; its architectural form is described in more detail by its floor plan, material and dome.

The exterior of Wasserschloss Crottorf can be viewed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Check before visiting whether this arrangement is still in effect. Bus route 265 connects Freudenberg, Friesenhagen and Wissen and serves the Festplatz Friesenhagen stop. Check the latest route and stop information before travelling.

In the wider Altenkirchen destination

A complementary look at the wider destination of Altenkirchen takes you to Flammersfeld: in 1849, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen founded the “Flammersfelder Hülfsverein zur Unterstützung unbemittelter Landwirthe” there, the world’s first loan fund association. Marienthal also has its own regional connection. The Klosterdorfweg trail runs around the former Franciscan monastery in Marienthal through the shaded spa forest of the Archdiocese of Cologne. Marienthal remains a popular place of pilgrimage to this day. These stops add explicitly named historical and cultural themes of the wider Altenkirchen destination to the view of Friesenhagen.
