Lippborg: Renaissance, Forest and Nature
Accommodation in Lippborg
Lippborg combines historic architecture with a varied landscape and a range of activities for cycling, golf and nature enthusiasts. During your stay, you can choose between the moated castle of Haus Assen, Uentroper Forest and guided tours. The wider destination of Lippetal also offers further insights into nature and cycling routes.
Haus Assen and Weser Renaissance
The moated castle of Haus Assen in Lippetal-Lippborg is a historic water castle with origins dating back to the 14th century. The present-day Renaissance castle was built in 1564. Haus Assen belongs to the historically significant second phase of the Weser Renaissance and is one of the most important aristocratic residences in Westphalia, as well as one of the most significant Renaissance monuments in the Hellweg region.
Three wings of the manor house, dating from around 1564, are arranged around a rectangular courtyard. This layout makes the historic architectural form and the castle’s date concrete. Public guided tours and events are regularly held at Haus Assen. If visiting the moated castle is important to your plans, check the current dates.
Forest and protected waterscape
Uentroper Forest in Lippetal-Lippborg covers 242 hectares. This large deciduous woodland is characterized by a natural, species-rich stand of oak and hornbeam. It therefore offers a different focus from the historic castle complex: here, the forest and tree species take center stage, while Haus Assen is defined above all by its Renaissance architecture.
East of Uentroper Forest lies the “Strängenbach/Wesendahlsbach” protected area in the Lippborg district. It covers 6.8 hectares and protects a natural, structurally diverse watercourse. The different area sizes help put the landscape features into perspective: the forest covers 242 hectares, while the water protection area covers 6.8 hectares.
Routes and guided activities
The “Prima Klima Route” in Lippborg is a nature and environmental rally of around 10 kilometers. Each stop has a task. Also planned for 2026 is the guided cycling tour “Nature in the Lippeaue around Lippborg”: it starts at the car park on Ilmerweg, covers around 12 kilometers and lasts 3.5 to 4 hours. These details show two different formats—a rally with tasks at stops and a guided tour with a set duration. Tour programs may change, so check the date before making plans.
For 2026, a 1.5-hour spiritual guided tour of the church of Ss. Cornelius and Cyprianus in Lippborg is available by arrangement. Agree on a date in advance. If you are interested in golf, the Golfclub Stahlberg im Lippetal e. V. in Lippborg has an 18-hole golf course.
Nature in the wider destination of Lippetal
In the wider destination of Lippetal, the Lippe and Ahse floodplains offer accessible floodplain landscapes and opportunities for nature observation. West of Lippborg, the dynamics of a floodplain can be observed in the Lippeaue: during high water, extensive grassland and water bodies are completely inundated. As the water level falls, still waters and damp hollows attract numerous bird species.
The Auenland Cycle Route is also part of the wider destination of Lippetal. It runs through the Lippe floodplains and the Ahse meadows to the south, is almost 70 kilometers long and extends 37 kilometers from east to west. There are 14 observation points and rest areas along the route. By comparison, the “Prima Klima Route” in Lippborg is much shorter, at around 10 kilometers. This makes it possible to compare the local rally and the longer cycle route within the wider destination by their different lengths.
