Sterkrade offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: industrial history, a centrally located park, a large woodland area, and recurring cultural events and markets. If you are looking for a hotel in Sterkrade, you can consider whether your stay should focus more on history, nature, or an event. The district’s features offer concrete points of reference.

Industrial History and Historic Sites

The Neue Hoffnung ironworks was founded in 1782 in the area of what is now Sterkrade’s town centre. Over the following two centuries, Gutehoffnungshütte (GHH), its metalworking plants, and its mines played a major role in shaping Sterkrade’s industrial history. That history also includes Ruhrchemie in Holten, which was co-founded in 1927 by GHH and Concordia colliery. Iron, metalworking, mining, and chemicals are therefore important historical themes of the district.

Until 1809, the Cistercian convent of “Maria ad rivulum” stood on the site of the Provost Church of St. Clemens. Another testament to the area’s industrial history is the three-legged headframe of the former Sterkrade colliery, dating from 1903. It is one of the few surviving headframe structures of its kind in the Ruhr metropolitan area and one of the oldest surviving trestle headframes in North Rhine-Westphalia. Its design and age place it within the region’s mining history.

Park and Woodland on Different Scales

Volkspark Sterkrade lies in the centre of the district and covers 13.5 hectares. Walking paths and a large pond define the park. At 204 hectares, Sterkrader Wald is considerably larger: it is a mixed beech forest crossed by the Handbach stream. The two area figures make the different scales of these green spaces tangible.

Of the woodland, 81 hectares are designated as a nature reserve. The protected area includes a valuable alder carr with peat moss, old stream meanders, and marl pits that serve as spawning waters for endangered amphibian species. The nature reserve also protects dry to damp oak-hornbeam forests and valuable old stands of red beech trees over 100 years old. These habitats provide a home to numerous animal and plant communities, some of which are endangered.

Events and Local Activities

The traditional Sterkrader Fronleichnamskirmes is a fair whose origins date back to 1829. The Sterkrader Lesesommer offers a different focus: this event series has been running since 2016 and offers a varied programme for all ages. The 2026 edition took place from 28 August to 13 September, transforming Sterkrade’s town centre into a stage for literature, stories, and encounters.

In unusual locations and a special atmosphere, the programme included numerous readings, talks, participatory activities, and creative events for listening, discovering, and sharing ideas. Literature and shared experiences are at the heart of this event series, while the Fronleichnamskirmes is a traditional fair.

The “Sterkrader Spätschicht” adds an after-work market to the local events. It has been held regularly at Kleiner Markt since late 2017 and combines market stalls with food and drink. If you are planning a visit, check the current schedule, as exact dates and times may vary.
