For a stay in Fenke, the Fenke 1, Fenke 2 and Fenke 3 quarries, along with the signposted “Around Lindlar” circular trail, provide useful points of reference. The quarries differ in size and condition; the route adds an option for a walking or cycling trip. You can consider these different themes separately and plan your time to suit your interests.

The Fenke 1, 2 and 3 quarries

The three quarries differ in size and features. Fenke 2 quarry measures 50 × 20 metres. The 2018 landscape survey describes Fenke 1 as a smaller, filled-in and levelled quarry measuring approximately 30 × 20 metres. At 150 × 35 metres, Fenke 3 is larger; the survey describes it as being divided into two areas by a newer path. These figures provide a clear comparison: Fenke 1 is the smaller, filled-in quarry, while Fenke 3 covers a considerably larger area. Fenke 3 was also described at the time as having a quarry face around five metres high, which ran along the slope and was interrupted several times by infill and spoil heaps. The different dimensions and shapes give each quarry its own distinct character.

Walking and cycling on “Around Lindlar”

The “Around Lindlar” circular trail is also suitable for a cycling trip. Along its entire length, it is marked with a black “L” on a white background. For the most part, it follows scenic, well-maintained forest tracks, with relatively few single-track sections. As one possible starting point, you can choose the car park on Wiesenstraße in Fenke. From there, access to the signposted trail is via Neuefelder Straße and Wolfskuhl Street. You can therefore include the circular trail in your plans as either a walk or a cycling trip.

Clubhouse for celebrations

For a celebration, the Rot-Weiß Fenke 1964 e.V. carnival association makes its clubhouse available with minimal fuss and flexible arrangements. If you would like to include the clubhouse in your plans, check availability in advance. This will help you coordinate the celebration with the other activities during your stay.

Additional attractions in the wider Lindlar destination

The wider destination of Lindlar offers additional ideas. Lindlar Recreation Park is a 5.6-hectare public park. Its accessible network of walking paths runs alongside an idyllic pond. The park also has an adventure playground with a tyre swing, slide, zip line and climbing castle. So, in addition to the quarries, Lindlar offers further options for walks and play.

The 6.2-kilometre Steinhauerpfad circular trail, Bergischer Streifzug No. 8, features a total of eight information boards and two audio stations. Guided walks are also offered along the trail, with background information about quarries, greywacke and the oldest forest in the world. If you are planning to join one of these walks, check current availability and booking conditions in advance.

At the Lindlar quarries, visitors can search large blocks of stone with a hammer and chisel for fossils millions of years old. This activity is offered to groups and families daily from April through October, except Sundays and public holidays. If you would like to include fossil hunting in your trip, check current dates and booking conditions in advance.
