Baumberg can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: local history, museums, nature reserves and cycling tours. If you are looking for a hotel in Baumberg, this overview can help you plan your trip around the interests you want to pursue locally. The following points distinguish historical buildings and everyday life from specific nature and leisure activities.

Local History in Buildings and Everyday Life

The Catholic Church of St. Dionysius has a 34-metre-high tower, which is believed to date from the mid-13th century. A linden tree also stands on Kirchberg; its age is estimated at around 260 years, and it is protected as a natural monument. Two different periods of time are represented side by side here: a church tower believed to have originated in the Middle Ages and a much younger protected tree. The tower’s date of origin remains an assumption, while the linden tree’s age is an estimate.

Baumberg’s former livelihoods are also part of its story. Until the 20th century, the town’s economy was based on fishing on the Rhine, agriculture, goat breeding and traditional crafts such as basket weaving. These activities ranged from life on the Rhine and agricultural work to a specific craft. They complement the history of the town’s buildings with an account of how people once made their living here.

Museums: Roman Finds and Rhine Fishing

The Roman Museum Haus Bürgel presents Roman archaeological finds in eight exhibition rooms within the walls of a former fort. The finds and the architectural setting are part of the same spatial context: the exhibition is housed within the fort’s former walls. It is advisable to check current opening hours before your visit.

The Eel Fishing Museum is housed aboard the historic eel fishing boat “Fiat Voluntas”. It focuses on the history of fishing on the Rhine and everyday life aboard an eel fishing boat. This museum therefore offers a distinct perspective on life on board and complements the broader historical subject of fishing. As of August 31, 2026, the museum is closed until further notice due to construction work; the car park at the museum is also currently unavailable because of construction work. Before making plans, check whether these temporary conditions still apply.

Nature Reserves and Cycling Tours

Haus Bürgel is located in the Urdenbacher Kämpe nature reserve in the Baumberg district of Monheim. The Baumberger Discovery Loop runs through the Baumberger Aue nature reserve and is weather-dependent. The two nature reserves have similar names, but are associated with different destinations: Haus Bürgel is in the Urdenbacher Kämpe, while the Discovery Loop runs through the Baumberger Aue. Take the weather dependency into account when planning your route.

Two different kinds of planning information are useful for cycling tours. The City-Country-River Tour is a circular cycling route for exploring the natural landscape around the districts of Monheim and Baumberg. From May to September, the Monheim-Baumberg after-work cycling tour starts every Thursday at 6 p.m. One tour is described as a circular route, while the other has specific season and start-time information. Check seasonal dates and possible cancellations in advance.

In addition, a weekly market is held in Baumberg on Fridays; dates may change on public holidays. If you would like to include a visit to the market in your weekly plans, check the date for the relevant week.
