Meerbusch combines Rhine scenery with cycling routes, natural areas and cultural offerings. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Meerbusch, you can start planning by deciding what you would like to do each day: would you rather spend your time cycling, enjoying nature, or exploring culture and history? The city offers various ways to do so—from routes and landscapes to a theatre programme and historic sites.

Cycling and Rhine scenery

Meerbusch’s 11-kilometre Rhine waterfront stretches from Büderich in the south to Nierst in the north. The Rhine dyke cycle path runs through Meerbusch, from the Krefeld city boundary in the north to the Düsseldorf city boundary near Lörick in the south. The 38-kilometre Stadt-Land-Fluss route offers a different kind of ride: it starts at Osterath station and circles the entire city. The cycling infrastructure includes around 70 kilometres of cycle paths and 150 kilometres of mostly smoothly paved agricultural roads. The routes therefore differ both in length and in course: one crosses Meerbusch, while the other circles the city.

The Ilverich Old Rhine meander offers a distinctive landscape, providing a refuge for rare animal and plant species. The Rhine waterfront and the Old Rhine meander represent different natural landscapes within the city: a long riverside landscape on the one hand, and a refuge for species on the other.

Nature and recreation at Latumer See

The Latumer See area was transformed into a local recreation and landscape conservation area in the 1980s. Numerous animal and plant species make their home in the woodland and fields around the lake. Visitors can walk around the lake and take a break on the wooden platforms by the water; joggers use a circular route. There is a clear restriction on the use of the lake: swimming and boating are prohibited at Latumer See.

The Arche Noah youth farm offers a different kind of nature and leisure experience. Its grounds feature animal houses, enclosures and aviaries, as well as ponds with bridges and walkways. There is also a pony-riding track and play areas with swings, slides, carousels and vehicles. The farm’s specific offerings therefore differ significantly from the walking and running options at Latumer See.

Culture, theatre and historic sites

Forum Wasserturm is located in the heart of the Lank-Latum district and offers cabaret, variety performances, comedy, theatre, cinema and concerts. The “Lotumer Buretheater” also performs at the venue: its season begins every year in October and features theatre in the local Platt dialect. If a cultural event is to be a highlight of your stay, this October season offers a specific date to plan around.

Teloy Mill is also in Lank-Latum. It is the only mill in the city of Meerbusch with fully restored sails and is now used as an exhibition venue and meeting place. The moated estate of Gut Dyckhof was first mentioned in official documents in 1393. The two sites illustrate different aspects of the city’s built heritage: the mill’s current use and the estate’s early documentary history.

The listed Haus Meer complex includes the park, the foundations of the old coach house, the garden pavilion known as the “Teehäuschen” (Tea House), the ice cellar and the boundary wall, as well as foundation remains and the vaulted cellar of the former Meer Monastery. The Alter Kirchturm memorial offers another perspective on art history: it is regarded as Joseph Beuys’s only complete work of art in a public space outside a museum setting.

More information to help plan your stay

The Langst-Kaiserswerth Rhine ferry is another option to consider: the modern “Michaela II,” operated by the Meerbusch ferry family Schäfer, now makes the crossings. If you plan to take the ferry, check the timetable in advance. This will help you plan your trip around the topics that interest you and the conditions of the relevant offerings.
