When looking for a hotel in Vörden, your interests may be the deciding factor: Would you like to explore historic buildings, spend time outdoors or include cycling routes in your plans? Vörden has its own history and leisure attractions; at the same time, you can also consider the town as part of the wider Marienmünster destination.

History in buildings and landmarks

At the beginning of the 14th century, Vörden was fortified with a castle, walls, a rampart and a moat to protect Marienmünster Abbey. It took five years to complete the fortifications. This early history of the town therefore includes several elements, not just the castle.

A more recent landmark is the observation and museum tower, built in 2008. Its viewing platform is 21 metres high; the tower itself is about 26 metres high, excluding the symbolic signal mast. The two measurements therefore refer to different points: the platform and the height of the tower.

Religious buildings and landmarks also bear dated traces of the town’s history. The Hungerberg Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows was built in 1852 using the massive exterior walls of the former telegraph station building. The Way of the Cross to Hungerberg was established in 1857 with 14 stations. The present-day Church of St Kilian in Vörden was consecrated in 1901. These dates mark different events—the construction of the chapel, the establishment of the Way of the Cross and the consecration of the church.
