Get to know Neuastenberg through a range of activities to help plan your trip: circular hikes, a nature and adventure trail, activities at Postwiese and cycling. If you’re looking for a hotel in Neuastenberg, this selection can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. The options differ in length, route and theme.

Culture and nature as distinct areas of focus

The West German Winter Sports Museum opened in 1998 in Winterberg-Neuastenberg, at the foot of Kahler Asten. A different perspective is offered by the 3 km nature and adventure trail around Gerkenstein, Neuastenberg’s local mountain. Its 19 stations explore nature, the landscape and interesting facts about the high-altitude villages of Neuastenberg and Lenneplätze. The museum focuses on winter sports, while the trail highlights nature and the landscape.

Steinkuhle Nature Climbing Park offers another activity. It has 16 climbing routes, opened on 23 September 2012 and is near the biathlon stadium. The trail and climbing park therefore offer different types of activity: one is a themed route with stations, while the other offers climbing routes.

Circular hikes: six or seven kilometres

The signposted N2 – Hoher-Knochen-Weg circular hike is 7 km long. It passes through the valley of the young River Lenne and over Hoher Knochen; the start and finish are at the Neuastenberg Tourist Information Office. The 6 km N1 – Zwistmühle circular hike takes in different sections of the landscape: it follows a scenic border path through the Ochsenstallsgraben and Odeborntal valleys, and also starts and ends at the Neuastenberg Tourist Information Office.

Length and route are the main points of comparison between the two circular trails: N1 is one kilometre shorter than N2, and they pass through different landscapes. A water wheel is located in Odeborntal at ZwistmĂĽhle on trail N1. This gives the route a specific named point of interest as well as its distinctive course.

Postwiese and outdoor activities

The 500 m natural toboggan run at Postwiese in Neuastenberg has steep bends, is snow-covered using snowmaking equipment and is illuminated. Postwiese also has a fun park for snowboarders. Its operation may depend on snow and weather conditions, so take this into account when planning.

At regular intervals, the Postwiese shuttle bus takes passengers with a valid ticket to the Postwiesen-Skidorf Neuastenberg free of charge. Timetables may change, so check the current service frequency before travelling. This allows you to include the trip to the ski village in your plans without relying on a specific departure time.

Cycling is another activity associated with the area: Neuastenberg is connected to the Bike Arena Sauerland. Its well-developed network of routes offers mountain bikers and road cyclists a range of rides and challenges. This adds another way to tailor your stay to your interests alongside the hiking options.

Winterberg as a wider travel destination

The wider destination of Winterberg has additional, distinct activities to offer. In Winterberg Trail Park, the “Family First” loop is suitable for trail beginners and families looking to get their first experience on trails. The Skiliftkarussell Winterberg ski area offers 44 kilometres of descents on groomed slopes and has modern chairlifts. The two examples have different areas of focus: the loop is aimed at trail beginners and families, while the ski area focuses on descents and chairlifts.

Neuastenberg therefore offers specific options for a trip focused on hiking, nature, winter sports or cycling. The different route lengths, landscapes and activities can help you decide more precisely what you would like to focus on.
