Gleidorf brings together churches, a signposted circular hiking trail and the Sauerland Cycle Ring. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can assess the area based on your interests in hiking, cycling and culture. The geographical heart of Gleidorf is where the Gleier and Lenne rivers meet. Highlights range from historic churches and interactive features in the Herz-Jesu Church to practical information for a hike. This makes it easy to choose your destination based on the activities you are interested in during your stay.

Churches and Local History

The Church of the Resurrection in Gleidorf was built in 1873; the Peace Chapel was built in 1858 by brothers Franz and Anton Lingemann in honour of the Virgin Mary. Since 1984, the Herz-Jesu Church in Gleidorf has been an example of contemporary church architecture. Visitors can select texts and songs on an interactive screen; the lighting changes colour to match. The historic church, chapel and contemporary architecture each lend a different character to the local church landscape. Gleidorf’s history also includes its role as a transit area for pilgrims, merchants and mercenaries, who used the old Heidenstraße to cross the Sauerland.

Hiking and Cycling in Gleidorf

The regional GL3 circular hiking trail starts and ends at the church in Gleidorf. The loop is 4.7 km long, takes about 1.5 hours and is marked with the GL3 hiking symbol. It heads towards Bad Fredeburg on a gentle incline and returns to Gleidorf on a gentle descent. Its length and approximate duration provide a useful basis for planning your day. Parking is available at the church. The starting point can also be reached via the “Unterdorf” bus stop, served by routes S90, 463, R69 and S40.

For cyclists, the Sauerland Cycle Ring passes through Gleidorf and close to both the Protestant and Catholic churches. The “Wilde 13” playground is right on the Sauerland Cycle Ring and has, among other things, a climbing frame, swings and slides. The Bauernland cycle route leads onto the Sauerland Cycle Ring, which runs through Gleidorf to Schmallenberg.
