Discover Bünde
Accommodation in Bünde
Bünde offers several distinct reasons to stay: the geological landscape of Doberg, the history of tobacco and cigars, and historic buildings. There is also an urban park and a cycling network linking the center with the city districts. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether nature and geological history, a museum, or architectural heritage is the deciding factor for you.
Doberg: Geological History and Distinctive Landscapes
The Doberg nature reserve lies on the southeastern edge of Bünde and covers 48 hectares. Its fossil-rich marl deposits date from a bay of the North Sea as it existed at the time and are around 38 to 25 million years old. The area’s history therefore reaches far back, while its particular geological significance is also evident in the complete sequence of the Lower, Middle, and Upper Oligocene: Doberg is northern Germany’s only surface outcrop with this complete sequence.
The terrain also shapes the nature experience. Steep walls, broad basins, and round and elongated pits give Doberg its distinctive character. Fossil-rich layers and visible landscape features bring together two perspectives on geological history: deposits from an ancient marine environment and the nature reserve’s present-day form.
Tobacco History and Museum
The German Tobacco and Cigar Museum is housed in the Striedieck’sche Hof, a farmstead built in 1828. The museum features 2,230 exhibits and 31 media stations devoted to tobacco and tobacco consumption. This makes it possible to explore the subject from several angles: through both the collection and the media stations.
Two early production dates are part of the history of cigar-making in Bünde. Georg Meyer began cigar production in Bünde in 1842; Tönnies Wellensiek followed in 1843. This timeline adds the beginnings of the local cigar industry to a museum visit and places both names in the context of the city’s history.
Church Architecture and Historic Houses
St. Lawrence’s Church is one of the oldest church foundations in Westphalia. At the heart of the present-day building is a late Romanesque cross hall dating from the 13th century. Hof Rahning provides another architectural link to the past: the house is a four-post timber-framed building dating from 1677. The two examples represent different periods of construction; for St. Lawrence’s Church, the 13th-century core building is noted in particular, while for Hof Rahning, it is the year the timber-framed house was built.
Park and Cycling Network
Steinmeister Park is a 2.5-hectare urban green space with walking paths, benches, and a playground. These amenities make it a different kind of place to visit from Doberg’s geological landscape or the museum’s exhibitions. If you want to plan a green break in the city, you will find paths and places to sit here; there is also a playground.
A useful feature for finding your way by bicycle is the structure of the municipal cycling network: it runs mostly away from main roads and consists of three ring routes and radial lines from the center to the city districts. The network described thus includes both routes along the rings and connections from the center to the outlying areas. If you are planning a bike ride, check the current route, as infrastructure projects can change the network.
