When planning a stay in Weyer, you can focus on local history, views or walking routes. The Late Gothic parish church bears witness to the village’s earlier architectural history; Brehberg offers panoramic views, and two trails present Weyer’s history in different ways.

Parish Church and Local History

St. Cyriakus Parish Church in Weyer is a Late Gothic hall church built on the site of a Romanesque pillar basilica. It is one of the oldest parish churches in the Mechernich municipal area. It is listed as a protected monument of the City of Mechernich under UDB No. 96 and LVR object No. 990, and as an archaeological monument under UDB No. 4 and No. EU 130 of the LVR Office for the Preservation of Archaeological Monuments. The remains of the once very large Weyer Castle, now incorporated into a farm, are also part of the local cultural heritage. Celtic, Roman and Frankish traces add to the history of the village. Parts of a Roman aqueduct are still integrated into the local water supply.

Views from Brehberg

Brehberg lies on the outskirts of Weyer and, at 525 metres, is the highest point in the Mechernich municipal area. The Eifel View on the hill offers a panorama encompassing the Siebengebirge, the Stockert radio telescope, Michelsberg and Hohe Acht. The view complements the village’s historical themes with vistas of prominent landmarks in the surrounding landscape. If you are considering Weyer as a travel destination, you can choose between a focus on architectural history, local history or scenic views.

History Trails and Other Routes

The Weyer History Trail is a circular route. It first runs around Weyer and then through the village centre. The route passes the geographical centre of Euskirchen district, which is on the outskirts of Weyer, near the Eifel View on Brehberg. The history trail has 20 stops and 16 information panels. They tell the story of the village over more than 1,155 years, from Celtic times to the present day. The trail is not signposted; digital maps and GPX files are recommended for navigation. The Ahr-Urft Trail also passes through Weyer.

The Kelten-Römer-Ritter Adventure Trail takes a different approach: it leads visitors through the village with Ritter Pavin von Weyer as its guide. Its 11 stops, each with an information panel, invite visitors to take part and explore. The two trails offer different ways to discover Weyer’s history: the history trail traces the village’s development over a long period, while the adventure trail explores its themes through a guide character and interactive stops.

These include farmhouses, windmills, workshops and village community buildings.
