Benenberg – Hiking and Cultural Landscape
Accommodation in Benenberg
For a stay in Benenberg, hiking routes and the cultural landscape offer two specific points of interest. The routes differ in their destinations and courses; south of the village, the field terraces and an ensemble of fruit trees add historic landscape features. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are more interested in hiking or in the area’s former rural land use.
Hiking by Destination and Route
The Benenberg–Manscheider Bachtal circular hike leads from Benenberg to the Manscheider Bachtal and returns via the Sistiger Heide. Along the stream valley, the route passes through meadows and forests. The destination and return journey give the hike a clear sequence: the Manscheider Bachtal is the destination, while the Sistiger Heide lies on the way back. This route is distinguished by linking two named landscapes, not just by the name of its destination.
The Benenberg–Wildenburg circular hike has a different focus. It leads from Benenberg to Wildenburg Castle and back. In comparison with the stream valley route, the castle is the named destination here; the other hike is shaped by the stream valley and the Sistiger Heide. When choosing between the circular hikes, you can use this comparison as a guide: one route has the castle as its destination, while the other follows a sequence of landscapes comprising a valley and heathland.
The EifelSchleife Wildenburgsteig reaches Benenberg after a stretch through the forest. The “As Far as the Eye Can See: Blooming Diversity!” themed trail adds another option for planning your hike: it can be extended via Benenberg for the return to Sistig. The circular hikes focus on their destinations and the sequence of landscapes; for the themed trail, the focus is on the extension for this return journey. Before setting out, check current trail conditions and signage, as both can change.
Field Terraces and Historic Land Use
The field terraces at Benenberg 1 lie south of the village and face south. Below Benenberg is a former field terrace with four clearly visible, wide steps facing southeast. Hedges and woody vegetation provide habitat for various animal species, especially butterflies. Extensive grazing supports the diversity of flora and fauna. This landscape feature therefore brings together the layout of former farmland and the importance of woody vegetation and grazing for habitats.
The fruit tree ensemble in Benenberg is representative of a historic form of rural self-sufficiency in fruit. It adds another aspect of rural land use to the terraces: while the former field terrace is characterized by its four steps, the ensemble points to the provision of fruit. For anyone interested in cultural history as well as hiking, terracing and historic fruit cultivation are two distinct themes in the Benenberg landscape.
