Schwelm

Old Town and Historic Buildings

Schwelm’s Old Town features slate-clad half-timbered buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. For the Historic Town Tour, the town’s marketing office provides a free leaflet with sights and information for exploring independently. Check whether the leaflet is available locally before your visit. This lets you explore the Old Town at your own pace and focus on individual buildings.

Another historical trace is the listed Brunnenhäuschen, Haus Friedrichsbad, Brunnenstraße and several neighboring half-timbered buildings. They recall Schwelm’s former heyday as a town with a health spring. The history is evident here not only in individual houses, but also in the group of buildings and streets mentioned above.

Church, Architectural History and Fossils

Two stages in the history of Christuskirche can be distinguished: King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia laid the cornerstone in 1842, and the church, built from sandstone blocks, was consecrated in 1849. Its materials create a different accent from the slate-clad half-timbered buildings of the Old Town: here, sandstone blocks take center stage, while there, the focus is on half-timbering and slate.

Martfeld Chapel houses the Zimmermann rock collection, featuring fossils from Schwelm Mass Limestone. This adds a natural-history focus to the town’s architectural heritage. If you are interested in the town’s geology, the collection connects fossils with the rock they come from.

Hiking around Schwelm

A section of the Way of St. James passes through Schwelm’s Old Town. A route of about 13.5 kilometers runs from Gevelsberg town center through Schwelm to Wuppertal-Beyenburg. The Schwelm section passes historic buildings and goes through the town center; its character also includes appealing natural scenery and an atmospheric stretch through town. Check the route markers and local conditions before setting off.

For another route option, the town of Schwelm provides information about the Schwelm Circular Route on its hiking trails page. Hiking and cycling maps for tours in the Bergisches Land are available at the town’s marketing office. Stock and opening hours may change, so check in advance whether the maps you want are available and when the office is open.
