Looking for a hotel in Langerwehe and want to plan your stay around specific destinations? The municipality brings together medieval architectural and cultural monuments, pottery and circular tours. Merode Castle and Laufenburg Castle are key cultural and historical sites; the Pottery Museum complements them with insights into the workshop and the courses on offer. A 15.4-kilometre circular tour, the Great Castle Tour and a military history walking tour offer different starting points for planning your trip. Booking or arranging a date is required for the latter.

Cultural Monuments in Langerwehe

Merode Castle is located in the village of Merode, a district of the municipality of Langerwehe in the Düren district. This important cultural monument has a history dating back to the 12th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1174. These dates answer different questions: the century places its history in context, while 1174 marks its first documented mention. Laufenburg Castle is also an important architectural and cultural monument from the 12th century and a popular excursion destination beyond the region. Both castle destinations are therefore historically associated with the 12th century.

Routes and Pottery

A 15.4-kilometre circular tour leads from Langerwehe railway station past the Pottery Museum and Merode Castle to Laufenburg Castle and back. This circular route combines pottery and both castle destinations. Check the current conditions and waymarking before setting out. The Great Castle Tour starts at Langerwehe railway station. Its first section heads southeast down Bahnhofstraße to junction 42 at the roundabout.

At the Langerwehe Pottery Museum, visitors can watch pottery being made in the museum's own workshop and take part in the pottery courses on offer. If you would like to take a course yourself, check the current programme in advance. The museum is one of the designated stops on the circular tour; a course can give your visit an additional focus on pottery, provided the current programme works for you. The museum thus combines watching with the opportunity to take part.

A military history walking tour is also part of the excursion programme in Langerwehe. Booking or arranging a date is required to take part. Check with the tourism provider for available dates before including this activity in your plans.

More Destinations in the Düren Destination Area

The Düren destination area also includes distinctive cultural and natural attractions. In the town of Düren, Burgau Castle was destroyed in 1944; it remained a ruin until 1975 and was restored in 1998. Today, it is once again considered a gem of the town. The castle's eventful sequence of destruction, years as a ruin and restoration makes its history a different focus from the medieval castle destinations in Langerwehe.

In Jülich stands the almost entirely preserved and restored citadel, with a ducal palace in the style of the Italian High Renaissance. It is considered the oldest complex of its kind north of the Alps. You can explore its ramparts, bastions and casemates on your own or as part of a guided tour. Check the current opening arrangements before travelling.

The Indemann stands on the Goltsteinkuppe in the municipality of Inden. The sculpture is 36 metres tall; at just under 150 metres, the Goltsteinkuppe is the highest point in the municipality of Inden. The Indemann's viewing platforms offer views of the Inden open-cast mine landscape; you can also walk along its outstretched arm. The Düren destination area thus offers not only castles and architectural history but also views of the open-cast mining landscape.
