Explore Hergarten on foot via two routes with different focuses: one highlights views and scenery, while the other showcases the village’s features. Both start at the “Zum Hohen Schirm” car park. They are similar in length; the main differences lie in the themes that take center stage along the way.

Circular trails in Hergarten

The approximately 4 km Nievesknipp Loop offers views toward the Rhine Valley and the Bördeblick Nievesknipp viewpoint. The tourism office noted that the trail signage was still to be completed. Check the current route information before setting out.

The easy 3.8 km circular trail through the village introduces Hergarten’s main features. In terms of length, the two trails are similar: the Nievesknipp Loop is approximately 4 km long, and the village trail is 3.8 km. While the first loop highlights viewpoints, the village loop focuses on the features of the place. Trail conditions and signage may change; check the current route information before setting out.

Village walk with architectural and church history

Stops on the village walk include the former municipal administration building, the Marien Chapel from 1876, and St. Martinus Church. The route therefore includes both a former administrative building and religious buildings from different periods. The date of the Marien Chapel places it in the 19th century.

Inside St. Martinus, you’ll find historic sacred art and modern stained glass. Access to church interiors may vary. If you are particularly interested in seeing the art inside the church, check in advance whether a visit is possible.

In the wider destination of Heimbach

Additional destinations are located in the wider destination of Heimbach and should be distinguished from Hergarten’s own features. The Heimbach National Park Gate is housed in the historic Heimbach railway station building. The Heimbach station can be reached from Düren on the RB21. The “Monastery Route” ranger tour starts at the National Park Gate on Fridays. Check the timetable and tour date before travelling.

The Art Nouveau Heimbach hydroelectric power station began operating in 1905; its power plant is still in operation. Groups and individuals can arrange guided tours by registering with the RWE visitor service two weeks in advance. Take this lead time into account when planning a visit.

Heimbach’s churches also reflect different historical periods. St. Salvator Church dates from 1981. A large Antwerp carved altarpiece contains the Pietà of the “Sorrowful Mother,” which is a pilgrimage destination. St. Clemens Church was built in the Baroque style at the beginning of the 18th century. Notable features include the high altar with its two-tier tabernacle and the richly decorated pulpit.

Another circular trail, “Art in the Woods,” starts in Heimbach. It is 2 km long, with a stated duration of 45 minutes. This makes it shorter than the two trails in Hergarten, which are just under four kilometres long; the time estimate provides another point of reference for comparing the routes.
