Köln-Brück lies on the edge of the popular Königsforst recreation area and offers another perspective for planning your trip through its historic sites. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether forest trails, nature watching, or local history should be the focus of your stay. Königsforst, Brück Market Square, and the buildings on Klausenberg each tell a different part of the district’s story. These destinations can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.

Nature and trails in Königsforst

Königsforst is a protected forest covering around 2,519 hectares in eastern Cologne. It has numerous hiking, cycling, and horse-riding trails. One specific option for cyclists is the “Cycling in Königsforst” route: it passes through Brücker Hardt and continues past the forest nature trail to the Brück wildlife enclosure. The forest offers numerous trails for different activities, while this cycling route follows a set, described itinerary. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the current route, as conditions may change.

The nature trail in Brück passes various tree and shrub species from temperate zones. At the Brück wildlife enclosure, you can observe and feed deer and wild boar. Along the named cycling route, plant life and wildlife offer different ways to experience nature.

Flehbach and Brück Market Square

The course of the Flehbach can be seen in markings on the cobblestones beneath Brück Market Square. For many centuries, a bridge there spanned the Flehbach and its associated marshy floodplain. The old Brüderstraße trade route from Köln-Deutz to Westphalia crossed this bridge. The square, stream, and former trade route are therefore all part of the same local history. Upstream and downstream from Brück Market Square, the Flehbach has been renaturalized to restore its original lowland stream character.

A later landmark in the history of transport is the light railway: in 1906, it connected Brück to Cologne; it is the predecessor of today’s Line 1. The area’s transport history therefore stretches from the old trade route to the light railway.

Churches, a mill, and a settlement by the forest

The present-day Catholic parish church of St. Hubertus in Brück was built between 1930 and 1931. An older religious landmark is the chapel built in Brück in 1708: St. Hubertus became its patron saint in 1716. The historic St. Hubertus Church in Köln-Brück attracts visitors with its impressive architecture. These dates give you two distinct reference points in Brück’s church history.

The Erker Mill also tells a different part of the area’s history. Today, only the mill’s outer walls remain. It is described as an overshot grain mill, and Wilhelm Busch is listed as its owner. Two arched gateway houses mark the entrance to the settlement on Klausenberg, which lies directly beside the forest. Together, the mill’s remains and the gateway houses offer different points of reference for Köln-Brück’s historic architecture.
