Steckenborn between a village stroll and the Rursee

Steckenborn lies above the Rursee in the Northern Eifel, amid a landscape of lake and plateau. The village stroll crosses the northern meadows, with hedges and old beech trees, and leads to the Hövel viewpoint. From there, the view extends across the Rursee towards Nideggen. The combination of meadows and views defines the stroll; the Rursee is both part of the surrounding landscape and the subject of the view from Hövel.

The village walk also introduces several small cultural and historical landmarks: a historic water well, a village chapel dating from 1864, restored half-timbered houses and a Westwall bunker, which is considered a cultural monument. The well, chapel, houses and bunker complement the landscape with tangible local and architectural history. The walk lets you experience different aspects of the village without reducing the views and built heritage to a single theme.

Another tradition is the parish of St. Apollonia’s annual four-day pilgrimage on foot to Barweiler, whose history dates back to 1750. Its duration and destination make it a distinct cultural tradition alongside the village stroll. If you are interested in taking part, check the arrangements in advance, as they may vary.

The hiking car parks at Hövel, Kierberg and the village square serve as starting points for local walks. These provide three named locations to help you orient yourself. Check current parking conditions before travelling, as parking options and access arrangements may change.

In the wider Simmerath destination, you can compare routes by activity and length. The 15.1-kilometre Panoramaweg starts at the village square in Simmerath-Strauch, crosses typical Eifel farmland to the Michelshof wind farm and offers panoramic views of the Eifel landscape, the Rursee and the Kermeter opposite along the way. The 14.2-kilometre Rursee-Höhenweg starts at the Rurseezentrum in Simmerath-Rurberg. For cycling, the 26-kilometre “Rund um den Rursee” route circles the lake. When comparing routes, consider the distance together with the activity; the two hiking trails also have different starting points.

The “Wolfshügel” Eifel viewpoint is 360 metres above Einruhr. From there, the distant view stretches over the village and across the Obersee to the Buhlert forest. The Eifelsteig and the local Püngelbach circular hiking trail (No. 75) pass directly by the viewpoint. If you would like to plan your route and views together, this connection gives you a specific point of reference.

The Rurberg National Park Gate in Simmerath features the “Lifelines of Nature” exhibition, a digital terrain model of the national park and national park films. It is also the starting point for free guided tours into the Kermeter forests. Since tour dates may change, check them before your visit.
