Schwerin offers a range of themes for your stay: the UNESCO Residence Ensemble with its Palace Garden, art at the State Museum, wildlife at the zoo and paths along the lake. For planning, you can consider culture, nature and outdoor activities separately. Each place and route has its own focus—from the museum to the lakeside path.

Residence Ensemble and Palace Garden

The Schwerin UNESCO Residence Ensemble comprises 38 components. These include the Grand Duke’s residence palace, manor houses, and cultural and religious buildings. The ornamental lake Pfaffenteich is also part of the ensemble. Since 2024, the ensemble has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a testament to the history and culture of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Its components show that the ensemble is not made up of the palace alone: different types of buildings and the lake are also part of it.

The 25-hectare Palace Garden was reconstructed according to historical plans for the 2009 Federal Garden Show. It is considered an impressive garden monument of high national importance. Its size, reconstruction and historical plans give the garden its own distinctive character alongside the buildings of the Residence Ensemble. If you are planning a culturally focused stay, you can combine architectural history with a garden without conflating the two themes.

Art from the collection to the present day

At the Schwerin State Museum, you can see an outstanding collection of Dutch painting, as well as paintings from the 16th to the 21st century. The permanent exhibition presents works by Rubens, Rembrandt and Frans Hals alongside contemporary work. Themed galleries are devoted to Marcel Duchamp and East German art. The exhibition thus brings together historical painting, modern themes and contemporary work.

Digital offerings, interactive stations and immersive installations add to the exhibition experience. The museum therefore combines the viewing of individual works with a range of interpretive formats. One contrast is particularly noteworthy when choosing what to see: Dutch painting is a central focus, while the juxtapositions and themed galleries introduce further artistic perspectives.

Exploring Lake Schwerin

The Schwerin City Round Tour runs along the shore of Lake Schwerin, passes Zippendorf Beach and ends at Reppin Castle. Another option is a hiking trip from March to October: take a boat from Schwerin Palace to Zippendorf, then follow the route for ten kilometres along the lakeshore to Reppin Castle. From there, you can enjoy a view across the lake.

Both routes lead to Reppin Castle, but the route described differs: the City Round Tour links the lakeshore, beach and castle, while the hiking trip begins with a boat journey and continues along ten kilometres of lakeside path. If you plan to take the second option, check boat services and seasonal dates in advance. This will help you take the boat trip and the walk that follows into account when planning your day.

Zippendorf, Mueß and wildlife

Zippendorf Beach has a public toilet, an accessible toilet, a German Red Cross water rescue station and a beach wheelchair. Check the information about these facilities before your trip. The cycle route from central Schwerin to the Schwerin-Mueß Open-Air Museum of Folklore follows Franzosenweg past Zippendorf Beach and then continues to Mueß on a cycle path. The beach and cycle route are therefore two different starting points for planning around Zippendorf.

Schwerin Zoo covers around 25 hectares and is home to about 1,700 animals from approximately 150 species. One of its special areas is an 8,000-square-metre savannah for southern white rhinos, considered unique in northern Germany. While the Palace Garden and museum focus on historic garden design and collections respectively, the zoo puts animal species and their habitats in the foreground. This lets you choose your own focus among culture, waterside paths and wildlife.
