Timmendorf combines a Baltic Sea beach with a harbor, lighthouse and water-based activities. When planning your hotel stay, you can consider whether you would like to focus on the beach, water sports or excursions.

Beach, Harbor and Lighthouse

Timmendorf Beach is a fine-sand, white Baltic Sea beach with gently sloping water. Timmendorfer Strand combines a bathing beach around 700 meters long with a harbor and a lighthouse in a maritime setting. After 60 years, the lighthouse was extended to its current height of 21 meters. The approximate length describes the bathing beach, while the harbor and lighthouse add to the maritime character. This means swimming, the harbor and the lighthouse are distinct features to enjoy during your stay.

Water Sports and Excursions

Activities at Timmendorfer Strand include pedal boating, water skiing, kitesurfing and surfing. The options range from a pedal-boat ride to surfing and other water sports; consider which activity interests you. Catamaran Center Manfred Sommer’s activities depart from Timmendorfer Strand on the island of Poel. The center offers sailing trips and white-water rides on the Baltic Sea. A sailing trip and a white-water ride are two different ways to experience the Baltic Sea on the water. Excursions on a passenger ship are also possible in Timmendorf. Bicycles can be rented at Timmendorf Beach. The beach is seasonally supervised by the DLRG from June to September; check the latest information about beach supervision before your visit.

More Destinations on the Island of Poel

Beyond Timmendorf, the island of Poel has its own destinations for culture, nature and exploring the island. The island church is a brick church dating from the first half of the 13th century, built in the Romanesque-Gothic style. Its 47-meter-high tower is a landmark visible across much of the island. The Poel Erratic Boulder Garden displays rocks found exclusively along the coasts or in the fields of the island of Poel; the garden also offers insight into around two billion years of Earth’s history.

The bird sanctuary island of Langenwerder is a distinct natural area: wading birds and waterfowl find suitable living conditions there, and migratory birds use the island as a resting place. The offshore bird sanctuary island of Langenwerder lies close to the beach at Gollwitz on the island of Poel; rare bird species can be observed from a beach chair.

From May to October, a six-hour island kayaking trip takes place on Thursdays off the coast of the island of Poel and neighboring islands. Equipment and an experienced skipper are provided for the group circumnavigation of Poel. The six-hour paddle is a standalone activity; check the date and provider information before your trip.
