Krusenhagen: Redentin Easter Play and Manor House History
Accommodation in Krusenhagen
Krusenhagen can be understood through its history, landscape and recurring equestrian events. Hof Redentin lies a few kilometres north of Wismar and belongs to the municipality of Krusenhagen. The Redentin Easter Play dates back to the 15th century, the listed manor house has a later architectural history, and recurring equestrian events complete the picture. If you are looking for a hotel in Krusenhagen, these highlights can help you plan your trip around the places and topics that interest you most.
Literary history and historic buildings
The Low German Redentin Easter Play was written by the Cistercian monk Peter Kalff in 1463 at Hof Redentin near Wismar. At the time, the estate belonged to Doberan Abbey. The play survives only in a manuscript from 1464, which is probably a copy of the original made in Redentin. The manuscript contains 2,025 lines of the Comoedia de Christi passione et resurrectione. The two dates refer to different stages: 1463 is the year the play was written, while 1464 is the date of the surviving manuscript. This distinction helps separate the probable copy from the creation of the play.
The listed manor house at Hof Redentin also tells the story of a different era. It was probably built in its present form around 1850 and altered repeatedly until the 1920s. Its preserved historic features include the wooden staircase to the upper floor and double-leaf doors. The manor house is located at Redentiner Landstraße 35 and 37. A listed barn stands in Krusenhagen on the road to Gatzow / zu Ausbau 3. The literary heritage and the more recent architectural history are two distinct aspects of the area’s history.
Landscape and cycling route
The surroundings of the Redentiner Mühle estate include meadows and sandy forest soils. In the broader travel destination of Nordwestmecklenburg, the northern part encompasses the landscape area “Nordwestmecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay”, while the southern part includes the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin”. The landscape of Nordwestmecklenburg is also shaped by terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat coastal sections, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains.
A cycling route called Krusenhagen–Börgerende-Rethwisch is 48 kilometres long. It follows Alte Rübenbahn, Deichstraße and Seestraße. If you plan to ride the route, check the current route before setting out.
Ostsee Trophy and equestrian activities
The Ostsee Trophy takes place annually at Hof Redentin; in 2026, it was held for the fourth time. Alongside equestrian sport, it features a row of stalls and food and drink. Family activities include pony rides, a petting zoo, a bouncy castle, a bungee trampoline and a hobby-horsing course. Individual programme items may vary from year to year, so check the dates and activities on offer before your trip.
The Redentiner MĂĽhle estate is also centred on horses: the operation focuses on the individual and sustainable development of young horses, keeping them in conditions suited to their species and age, and providing professional training for future performance. The Mecklenburger Meute is based at the Redentiner MĂĽhle estate and Gut Dalwitz. Its annual closing hunt takes place at the Redentiner MĂĽhle estate each November. If you would like to include it in your travel plans, check the date and visitor arrangements in advance.
