Discover Klütz: History and Activities
Accommodation in Klütz
Klütz combines a townscape shaped by historic monuments with a variety of cultural and leisure activities. You can weigh up which of these themes should take priority during your stay by considering the following differences.
Cultural History in Klütz
The early Gothic St. Mary’s Church, the Uwe Johnson Literature House, Bothmer Castle and the Klütz Mill are part of Klütz’s romantic townscape. Historic monuments shape the town and reflect centuries of aristocratic rule, crafts, agriculture and thriving trade between Lübeck and Wismar. The buildings offer different ways to explore local history: through architecture as well as literature and the development of crafts, agriculture and trade.
The literature house is located in a listed former granary built around 1890. It features a permanent exhibition on the life and work of the writer Uwe Johnson. In St. Mary’s Church, the chancel is the oldest part; it dates from the mid-13th century. The different periods are clearly reflected in the contrast between the medieval church interior and the granary dating from the late 19th century.
The Klütz Mill stands at the highest point in town, 32 metres above sea level. Bothmer Castle’s Festonallee is also one of the best-known sights in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A walk there offers the chance to experience the interplay of Baroque architecture and landscape design, as well as a 270-metre-long sunken lane. This brings the landscape design and its connection with architecture into focus alongside the buildings themselves.
Railway, Hiking and Other Activities
The narrow-gauge railway “de Lütt Kaffeebrenner” runs from Klütz to Reppenhagen; its route is six kilometres long and passes through the Klützer Winkel countryside. You can travel by steam locomotive or historic diesel locomotives. Check the specific operating days before your trip if you plan to take the train.
Another option is the easy “Over Fields and Meadows” hike, which is about 15 kilometres long. It starts at the Klütz tourist information centre or the Uwe Johnson Literature House. The railway route and the hike differ both in how you travel and in their stated lengths. You can weigh up whether to take a ride on a historic locomotive or follow a longer walking route during your trip.
At the Butterfly World, you can observe hundreds of butterflies in a tropical greenhouse. The Old Dairy offers two other activities with different focuses: at the “Kein Käse” gallery, you can make your own macramé jewellery. The “das Spinnrad” gallery demonstrates how wool products are made using a spinning wheel and loom. One activity is about making something yourself, while the other focuses on the tools and production techniques. As seasonal visitor information can change, check the details before your visit.
Food and Regional Cuisine
Klütz offers typical Mecklenburg and regional cuisine as well as traditional German food. Cafés and homemade cakes are also available. The Klütz Mill also has a farm shop, while the Orangery at Bothmer Castle serves savoury dishes. The options listed include cafés and cakes, as well as a farm shop and savoury food.
