Hohen Wieschendorf: Beach, Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Hohen Wieschendorf
Hohen Wieschendorf lies on the Baltic Sea and offers coastal paths on the headland, with views across Wismar Bay. The town’s profile also includes a marina, natural areas, golf and historic connections.
Beach Paths and Views
There is a sandy beach with beach chairs around the marina. On the Hohen Wieschendorf headland, a narrow walking path runs either right along the beach or above the cliffs. Both routes offer views across Wismar Bay, toward the island of Poel and westward over Wohlenberger Wiek. Cliffs shape the western and northern parts of the headland. You can choose between a route close to the beach and one above the cliffs.
Nature and Seasonal Conditions
Hohen Wieschendorf Marina is located within a Natura 2000 protected area. To protect resting and wintering birds, it is closed from October 15 to April 15 and must not be entered during this period. Check the marina’s seasonal dates before planning a boat trip. From mid-April to mid-October, 100 berths and a crane and slipway are available.
During the summer months, mute swans, dabbling ducks, red-breasted mergansers and gulls stay in the shallow waters north of the headland. East of the landing stage is a salt marsh that is closed to visitors and is particularly suitable for birdwatching. Both the time of year and the specific area are therefore important points of reference for nature enthusiasts.
Golf, Cycling and a December Attraction
Bades Huk Golf Club has an 18-hole championship course on a peninsula that extends into the Baltic Sea. The cycle path at Eggerswiek starts in the centre of Hohen Wieschendorf village and is signposted toward Beckerwitz.
At its Hohen Wieschendorf site, Erdbeerhof Glantz sells freshly cut Christmas trees and offers visitors the chance to cut their own every year in December. This recurring seasonal attraction takes place at a different time of year from summer birdwatching.
Local History and Tourism
The estate in Hohen Wieschendorf belonged to the Bade family from 1778 to 1884. The manor house later belonged to the Glantz family, from 1912 to 1945. Until the end of the 19th century, Wilhelm Bade organized the first Northland and polar cruises to the Arctic. The estate’s history spans the period when it was owned by the Bade family and the later era of the manor house under the Glantz family; Wilhelm Bade’s cruises are also part of the historical picture of the 19th century.
Hohen Wieschendorf is developing into the main tourist destination in the municipality of Hohenkirchen. Tourist infrastructure includes the marina and Bades Huk, as well as a newly developed holiday apartment complex and other holiday accommodation.
