Gressow combines architectural and regional history with nature around Lake Tressow. The village’s highlights include the church and several monuments; the surrounding area also offers a lake, wet meadows and a distinctive woodland landscape. Here, you can discover the region’s varied historical and natural character.

Church and regional history

In its present form, the church in Gressow is a typical brick church dating from the mid-14th century. The Baroque altar in Gressow church was created by J. F. Wilde in 1718. These details point to different periods: the medieval history of the building and its Baroque furnishings.

Gressow is also connected with the Reformation. At that time, Thomas Aderpul was the first Lutheran preacher in the Klützer Winkel. Tisa v. d. Schulenburg designed a memorial in the church. As well as architecture and religious art, regional religious history and this artistically designed memorial are among the things you can discover here.

Manor house, avenue and half-mile marker

The manor house at Dorfanger 3–4, with its park, is part of Gressow’s protected heritage. Another listed feature is the poplar avenue near Käselow and Beidendorf. The two features represent different kinds of heritage: a manor house with a park and an avenue.

Another historical reference can be found along the old B-105 route. At the entrance to Gressow, heading toward Wismar, a milestone—more precisely, a half-mile marker—stands on the east side of the road at kilometer 134.84. It adds a reminder of historic transport routes to the architectural and garden monuments.

Churchyard and Lake Tressow

The cemetery in Gressow is located directly around the church. A bench in the cemetery invites you to pause and enjoy the view of Lake Tressow. The churchyard thus brings the church and its immediate surroundings together with a view of the landscape.

Nature and trails in the surrounding area

Around Lake Tressow, unpaved hiking, riding and cycling trails run through the area designated for local recreation. You can choose trails to suit how you plan to get around: on foot, on horseback or by bicycle. This makes the lakeside surroundings a different kind of attraction from the church and architectural monuments.

The Jassewitzer Busch is also in the area around Gressow. This 200- to 250-year-old pollarded hornbeam woodland is one of the last remnants of this historic form of woodland management in Germany. The name describes a woodland of hornbeams whose growth has been shaped by pruning. While the trails around Lake Tressow cater to a range of leisure activities, the Jassewitzer Busch is notable for the long history of this distinctive woodland type.
