Lübtheen: Heath, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Lübtheen
Nature and local history are the focus of a trip to Lübtheen: the Lübtheen Heath, the Heath Trail and the Old Sexton’s House Museum. Rowing boats and pedal boats are available for hire at Waldbad Probst Jesar. This gives you a choice of activities for your stay—from a circular hike to a boating option and exhibitions on the town’s history.
Lübtheen Heath and the Heath Trail
The Lübtheen Heath covers 1,400 hectares of open inland dunes and extensive heathland. Since 2015, it has been part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Flusslandschaft Elbe Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Both this distinctive landscape and its connection to the biosphere reserve are part of Lübtheen’s nature offering.
The Heath Trail is an approximately 8 km circular route that starts at the Waldbad Probst Jesar car park in Lübtheen. Open heathland with silver grass and pine trees characterises the route. Late summer is especially recommended, when the heather is in full bloom; the timing can vary from year to year. A covered seating area and an information board along the trail provide a place to take a break and get your bearings. For planning purposes, the route length is a guide, while the flowering period varies from year to year.
Access in the National Natural Heritage area
Since 1 April 2021, pedestrians and cyclists have been able to use some routes in the National Natural Heritage Lübtheen Heath, the former Lübtheen military training area. Access is prohibited away from the designated hiking and cycling routes. Due to its former military use, the area is contaminated with ammunition and unexploded ordnance. Stay on the designated routes and check the current access rules before your visit.
Waldbad Probst Jesar and boat hire
Waldbad Probst Jesar is on the eastern shore of a lake in Probst Jesar, east of Lübtheen and south of Hagenow. Rowing boats and pedal boats are available for hire there; operating details may vary seasonally. Check these details if you are planning to hire a boat during specific travel dates. The Heath Trail starts at the Waldbad car park. The difference between the activities is clear: the Heath Trail is a circular walking route, while the Waldbad offers rowing boats and pedal boats for hire.
Old Sexton’s House Museum
Since 29 June 2003, the Old Sexton’s House Museum has been located in the former sexton’s house on Schulstraße in Lübtheen. Its exhibitions cover the history of mining and the history of vehicle manufacturing in Lübtheen. The connection to the town is explicit in the case of vehicle manufacturing; mining history is another subject. Local history thus complements the nature themes with a distinct cultural focus.
Culture in the wider destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim
In the wider destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim, Ludwigslust Palace offers a glimpse of courtly life. It presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries. The palace was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and, together with its park and town, forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” It is also the centrepiece of an almost entirely preserved late Baroque town layout, with a former court church and an English-style landscape park.
