Neuhausen/Spree: Between Culture and Nature
In the municipality of Neuhausen/Spree, you can tailor your trip to suit your interests: churches and music events provide cultural highlights, while the Spree, the reservoir, trails and natural areas draw you outdoors. The attractions are spread across different parts of the municipality and offer a variety of experiences.
Churches and Events
The fieldstone church in Komptendorf is the largest church in the municipality of Neuhausen/Spree. It has a Renaissance gable and a baptismal angel donated in 1698, which descends from the ceiling during baptisms. Its architectural design and baptismal ceremony each have their own distinctive features. In Klein Döbbern, the core of the church dates back to the late 13th century. By comparison, the donation of the baptismal angel in Komptendorf is dated 1698, giving the two churches different historical milestones.
Events also offer two distinct highlights. The traditional International Music Festival takes place every two years in June in Komptendorf, welcoming up to 1,000 musicians from several countries. The Neuhausen/Spree Water Festival is held regularly in June and includes the region’s largest international dragon boat race. Both events are associated with June, but their programmes differ: one is a music festival, the other a dragon boat race. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the date of the next edition and the current programme in advance.
Water, Trails and Nature
On the banks of the dammed Spree in Klein Döbbern, you’ll find sandy beaches, playgrounds, swimming and boat jetties, a volleyball court, table tennis tables, bike hire, a mini-golf course and an observation tower. This offers a range of ways to enjoy your time by the water, with different options for play and sport as well as a viewpoint. Facilities and services may change, so it’s a good idea to check what’s currently available before your visit.
In Bagenz, activities include walks, swimming, volleyball, cycling and fishing. Separately, well-maintained hiking trails run along the Spree and around the Spremberg Reservoir, where you can go hiking and cycling. The Spremberg Reservoir and its banks were designated a nature reserve in 2004. Ospreys, cranes and kingfishers live in the “Kathlow-Sergen pond and meadow landscape” nature reserve. If you’re planning a visit to the water, check current bathing conditions and facilities.
Another place to go for a walk is the park on the Teehäuschengelände in Frauendorf. Located between the Mühlengraben and the Spree, it invites visitors to stroll. There are also various ways to enjoy activities with horses: Thunder Horse Ranch offers rides in the surrounding area and riding lessons. Carriage and covered wagon rides can be booked with the Glatzer family. You can choose between riding lessons or a horseback ride and a trip in a carriage or covered wagon. Check current availability before making plans.
In the wider Spree-NeiĂźe destination
The wider Spree-NeiĂźe destination also offers its own distinctive regional experiences. The East German Rose Garden in Forst (Lausitz) is a 17-hectare park where visitors can admire tens of thousands of roses in almost 1,000 varieties. The Spree Cycle Route crosses the Spree-NeiĂźe region for about 60 kilometres, running mostly along paved river dikes.
Other regional routes have their own distinctive themes: the Lower Lusatian Mining Tour passes active open-cast lignite mines and landscapes reclaimed after mining. The Prince Pückler Route showcases examples of landscape design from Pückler’s time and the present day. The Sorbian Impressions Tour offers insights into the lives and traditions of the Sorbian/Wendish minority living in the region. The wider Spree-Neiße destination thus brings together mining and landscape themes alongside cultural perspectives.
