Lindow (Mark) brings together lakes, history and opportunities to get active. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether you would most like to explore the town’s lakes, the monastery complex or the running routes.

The Lakes of Lindow

At 438 hectares, Lake Gudelack is the largest of the three lakes near Lindow (Mark). There are bathing areas on the north and east shores of Lake Gudelack, as well as a bathing facility in Lindow. Swimming may be seasonal, so check what is available for your travel dates if you are planning a day at the water.

Monastery History on Lake Wutzsee

The ruins of the convent and monastery church of Lindow Monastery are located on a small peninsula in Lake Wutzsee. The convent building, restored in 2011, is a landmark of the monastery and the town. The old monastery grounds include an ivy-covered park that has been restored. The monastery church was destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War and is now used as an open-air church for devotions and services.

A path along Lake Wutzsee passes through a nature reserve to the monastery grounds and the monastery ruins. The monastery complex is open to the public; the convent building ruins can be entered during the day from Easter until the end of October. Check these access conditions before your visit.

The Town Church, Music and Fontane

The Protestant town church also has its own architectural history: Georg Christoph Berger began building it in 1751 as a Baroque hall church with the famous Sauer organ; it was consecrated in 1755. The Lindower Sommermusiken (Lindow Summer Music) concerts are held in the church every year. If you would like to include an event in your stay, check the dates for your travel period.

Another connection to literature leads to Theodor Fontane. In his novel “Der Stechlin,” he portrayed Lindow Monastery as Wutz Monastery and dedicated a poem to it. A visit can therefore combine architectural and local history with a specific literary connection.

On Foot and on Marked Running Routes

The path to the monastery grounds combines history with a route through a nature reserve. If you would like to focus more on running during your stay, Lindow offers a suitable starting point: the town lies in the heart of the Stechlin Running Park and has marked routes that provide good conditions for runners. A walk to the monastery grounds and a running route offer different experiences, without requiring you to allow for a particular walking or running time.

Garden and Attic Museum

The “Garden of the Book,” established in 2019, is located at Lindow Monastery. This Jewish-Christian-Muslim educational and display garden features plant species from the Tanakh, the Bible and the Quran. The “Schau mal rein” attic museum offers a different way to explore history: visitors can admire, touch and try out historical everyday objects.

Museum visits are available on Sunday mornings or by appointment. Check in advance whether a visit is possible on your chosen date. When planning, you can weigh up the garden, museum, monastery history and activities on the water, and tailor your search for a hotel in Lindow (Mark) to the purpose of your trip.
