When looking for a hotel in Breddin, it helps to distinguish between specific local points of interest and the broader destination of Ostprignitz-Ruppin. The Maria Magdalena Church, the history of the railway station and the town, and regional themes offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Church, Art and Architectural History

Breddin’s Maria Magdalena Church is open to visitors free of charge during the day from Easter until Reformation Day. Check this seasonal access information before your visit.

The interior furnishings date from the renovation around 1847 and were restored after 1963. The altarpiece depicts “Christ in Gethsemane” and is a copy after an Italian master. The church’s extension also dates to 1847: it was built to the east, was cruciform and Romanesque in style, and extended to a semicircular fieldstone apse with brick edging. This allows the architectural form and furnishings to be considered separately: the renovation shapes the architecture, while the altarpiece provides a distinct focal point.

Damelack within the Municipality

Damelack is a district of the municipality of Breddin and lies on the Stud Farm Trail between the Brandenburg State Stud in Neustadt (Dosse) and the Mecklenburg State Stud in Redefin. In Damelack, the square around the listed church is framed by old lime trees, oaks and chestnuts. The so-called “Eierhaus” is also a listed building. These add further cultural and historical points of interest within the municipality to those in Breddin itself.

A Historical Milestone: the Railway Station

Breddin railway station opened in 1886, exactly 40 years after the Berlin–Hamburg Railway opened. This chronological detail adds a distinct aspect of local history to the church’s architectural history.

Ostprignitz-Ruppin as a Broader Travel Destination

Ostprignitz-Ruppin is a rural region characterised by open spaces and tranquillity, green beech and pine forests, meadows, shady avenues, and numerous lakes and rivers. The Ruppiner Seenland is one of the county’s travel regions. This regional perspective opens up further landscape and activity themes for planning your trip.

The Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park lies partly within Ostprignitz-Ruppin and is ideal for hiking and cycling. The Ruppiner Land Circular Hiking Trail partly follows European long-distance path E10. The Fontane Cycle Route takes cyclists to places and landscapes described by Theodor Fontane in his work “The Wanderings through the Mark Brandenburg.”

Equestrian sports and stud farm culture are also among the region’s attractions: the Brandenburg State Stud in Neustadt (Dosse) is a special draw for equestrians in Ostprignitz-Ruppin. The 160-kilometre Stud Farm Trail between the studs in Redefin and Neustadt (Dosse) forms an interregional network of riding trails with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The Kyritz-Ruppiner Heide covers 12,000 hectares within Ostprignitz-Ruppin and has been part of the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park since 2021. It is one of Europe’s largest contiguous areas of Calluna heath and provides a habitat for protected and endangered animal species, including more than 70 bird species. The wolf has also been among the species found there since 2008. Electrically assisted fat bikes make it possible to explore the heath on unpaved, often sandy paths and experience its animal and plant life with minimal impact.
