Schönermark borders Gransee directly to the west. The character of the village can be understood through its own history, its rural surroundings, and the town forest south of the village. When planning a stay, you can choose between focusing on village history and monuments or on the landscape and hikes in the wider region.

Local History and Architectural Heritage

The earliest recorded spelling of Schönermark is Schöner-Mark and dates from 1365. In 1590, Schönermark became the manor seat of the von Zernikow family. During the Thirty Years’ War, the village was devastated in 1634. These milestones link an early form of the name with the history of the manor and a turning point during wartime. The village church, listed as a Brandenburg monument under number 09165805, and the Schönermark war memorial are also part of the local heritage. The church represents the architectural heritage, while the war memorial serves as a separate place of remembrance.

Rural Surroundings

The area around Schönermark is quiet and rural, with extensive areas used for agriculture. The town forest lies south of the village and is home to the medieval watchtower and Dölschsee. The Wartberg is locally known as the “Schönermarker Alps.” The landscape therefore combines specific destinations such as the forest, lake, and tower with a local name for Wartberg.

Getting There, Hiking, and Cycling Routes

Gransee can be reached from Berlin Central Station by regional express train in about 45 minutes. This approximate travel time refers to Gransee; check connections and timetables before departure. A route of the Brandenburg Monastery Trail, around 20 kilometers long, runs from Lindow (Mark) via Meseberg to Gransee. A historically documented hike starting in Gransee passed through the Gransee town forest and stopped at the watchtower. Check trail markings and current conditions before hiking. For cyclists, signposted, paved routes such as the Polzow Cycle Route and the Stechlinsee Cycle Route lead to Gransee and nearby tourist destinations. As signage and surfaces may change, it is advisable to check the current route.

Oberhavel as a Regional Setting

As a broader travel destination, Oberhavel offers more to explore beyond Schönermark’s own local history. Oberhavel is part of the Ruppin Lake District tourism region. The 66 Lakes Hiking Trail and European long-distance path E10 pass through the district; Oberhavel’s many lakes and rivers also invite visitors to swim. For those interested in culture, the Palace Museum in Oranienburg displays famous works of art from the 17th century, as well as a unique silver chamber and a remarkable porcelain chamber. If you take a broader view of your stay, you can plan Schönermark’s local history and Oberhavel’s wider hiking and cultural attractions as separate focal points. In Oberhavel, Oranienburg Palace is also the oldest Baroque palace in the Margraviate of Brandenburg.
