Frankfurt / Oder: Culture and River Landscape
Accommodation in Frankfurt / Oder
Frankfurt (Oder) lies on the western bank of the border river Oder. Cultural attractions connected with Heinrich von Kleist and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach sit alongside a river landscape of former Oder channels and numerous tributaries. This means you can focus on both culture and landscape during your stay. Brandenburg, the wider destination, has more than 7,000 kilometres of cycle routes and around 3,000 lakes. This broadens the picture beyond the local river landscape.
Oder Riverbank and River Landscape
The Alte Oder and the Winterhafen follow a former course of the Oder and form numerous tributaries. From the Holzmarkt in the city centre, you can look out over Ziegenwerder Island, with its groynes, floodplain and northern tip. The two viewpoints offer different perspectives: the Alte Oder and Winterhafen point to the river’s former course, while the view from the Holzmarkt focuses on the island and its landscape features.
Kleist and Bach: Different Exhibitions
The Kleist Museum’s interactive permanent exhibition presents the life, work and influence of Heinrich von Kleist in the city where he was born and studied, Frankfurt (Oder). The current exhibition is scheduled to run until 11 December 2026. If you travel after that date, please check the current exhibition status. On request, the museum organises individual themed tours for groups and school classes; it is best to check the booking arrangements before your trip. The Kleist Museum is also located directly on the Oder-Neiße Cycle Route.
The concert hall “Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach” offers a different thematic perspective: it houses a multimedia permanent exhibition about Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s life, work and legacy. The exhibitions therefore differ in both subject and format: the display at the Kleist Museum is interactive, while the one at the concert hall is multimedia.
The Kleist Route and Its Stops
The Kleist Route has five stops and passes through urban areas and parks, taking in monuments and places connected with Heinrich von Kleist (1777–1811) and Ewald Christian von Kleist (1715–1759). Their dates of life point to different historical periods. While the museum exhibition offers a focused format, the route spreads its themes across several stops in urban areas and parks. This is a concrete difference to consider when choosing between a museum visit and a more place-based exploration of the two figures who gave the route its name.
Strolling and Seasonal Boat Trips
The Oder Promenade invites you to stroll along the riverbank past sights and works of art. At its landing stage, passenger boats offer trips seasonally. A walk and a boat trip therefore provide different ways to enjoy the riverbank. As boat trips are seasonal, check the sailing dates before your trip.
