Things to see and do in Serwest
The Planet Trail in Buchholz (Serwest) is about one kilometre long. It illustrates the relative sizes of the solar system on a scale of 1:1.4 billion. Length and scale provide different points of reference: length describes the distance, while scale shows the relative sizes represented in the astronomical display. This makes it possible to consider the trail’s length and its thematic focus separately.
The village church of Serwest is a rectangular hall built from carefully worked fieldstone blocks. The term “hall” describes its rectangular layout. The church probably dates from the second half of the 13th century. Its specifically described construction and cautiously worded dating therefore go hand in hand.
The Bible Garden at the Engler organic farm in Serwest is located directly on the Via Imperii pilgrimage route. This brings a garden together with a clear connection to the pilgrimage route and adds another point of interest alongside astronomy and church architecture.
At the alpaca farm in Chorin-Serwest, alpaca walks and farm tours are offered by prior appointment. Kangaroos and other animals can be seen during these activities. Bear the appointment requirement in mind when planning your visit.
The “Alte Schule” café in Serwest, a district of Chorin, opened on 22 May 2026. Check the current opening hours before visiting.
Culture and nature in the wider destination of Chorin
In the wider destination of Chorin, you can travel directly to Chorin station on the RE3 rail line from Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Potsdamer Platz and Gesundbrunnen; services also run from the direction of Angermünde. From the station, a signposted footpath takes about 25 minutes to reach Chorin Monastery. The rail connections and footpath provide practical guidance for travelling to the monastery.
Chorin Cistercian Monastery was founded in 1273. The permanent exhibition explores the construction of the brick monastery and the medieval monastic economy in the context of regional history up to the monastery’s dissolution in 1542. Contemporary art is displayed in the infirmary, the monks’ former hospital and guesthouse. The monastery thus brings together subjects from architectural and economic history as well as contemporary art.
The guided tour of the grounds at Chorin Monastery lasts about 90 minutes. Outdoors, it follows the remains of the former monastery mill, passes the monastery’s west façade and continues along the Nettelgraben to Lake Amtssee; it ends at the cemetery. If the tour is important to your plans, check booking options in advance.
Since 1992, Chorin Monastery has hosted annual chapel concerts as a chamber music series. The series includes sacred and secular music from the Middle Ages to the modern era; individual programmes vary. It offers a different way to experience the monastery from the exhibition and guided tour of the grounds.
Swimming is permitted in Lake Amtssee in Chorin; the lake is designated as a bathing area and is a maximum of 6.5 metres deep. Check local notices for current conditions before swimming.
