Klosterfelde: Village History and Nature
Accommodation in Klosterfelde
Klosterfelde offers several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: local history, protected landscapes and hiking. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether historic sites, paths through wetlands or waterside nature should shape your stay. The wider destination of Wandlitz also offers its own cultural and hiking themes to focus on when planning.
Nature and hiking trails around Klosterfelde
The “Torfstich Klosterfelde” nature reserve protects a post-glacial fen complex, a small body of water and an inland dune. Bogs, water and an inland dune are therefore part of the area’s nature theme—a different focus from historic buildings and monuments.
There are two different options for hiking: From Lake Lottsche, a hiking trail leads 600 metres southwest to the nature reserve. Route NO03 passes through the Bogensee wetland to Klosterfelde. The path from Lake Lottsche is a short connection to the protected area; NO03 reaches Klosterfelde and then offers the option of returning to Berlin by train via Wandlitzsee. Check the timetable if you are planning this return trip.
The Kleiner and Großer Lottschesee lakes lie beyond Klosterfelde in the Liebenwalder Heide. There you will find bathing areas surrounded by forest and walking paths along the lake. This is a different nature experience from that of the nature reserve: the lakes are known for their bathing areas and lakeside paths, while the “Torfstich Klosterfelde” is defined by its fen complex, small body of water and inland dune.
Village history and local highlights
Klosterfelde’s village church dates back to the 13th century and is the oldest building in the village. On the newly redesigned village green are a Soviet memorial to those who fell in the Second World War and a German war memorial to the sons of Klosterfelde who fell in the First World War. The village’s history thus spans different periods: the 13th century for the church, and remembrance of the two world wars at the monuments.
Mustard-making is another local theme: Klosterfelde Mustard Mill produces natural and vegan varieties of mustard. This adds a culinary aspect to the village’s architectural and commemorative history, distinct from its nature and hiking themes.
Wandlitz as a wider travel destination
A day stage of the 400-kilometre 66 Lakes Hiking Trail passes directly through Wandlitz. The trail is described as one of Germany’s most attractive lowland hiking trails. The stage through Wandlitz is therefore a distinct hiking option when planning your trip.
For culture, Wandlitz offers the “Goldener Löwe” cultural venue in the historic town centre. Its programme includes musical events, cabaret, visiting theatre performances, readings and exhibitions. The Barnim Panorama in Wandlitz combines a nature park centre with an agricultural museum. Its outdoor area includes a show garden and a discovery trail.
Every year, the Barnim Panorama in Wandlitz hosts a museum festival. The programme includes a traditional fashion show, historic and new tractors, and activities related to the exhibition, show garden and discovery trail. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the current events calendar for dates.
