Nature

In Triberg in the Black Forest, the waterfalls plunge 163 metres down over seven cascades. This makes them some of the highest waterfalls in Germany. The waterfall area can be explored along the Nature Trail, Cultural Trail or Cascade Trail; information panels provide details about the animals, plants and history of the waterfalls. A pedestrian bridge and a viewing platform offer a close-up view of the cascades and falling water. The area around Triberg Waterfalls is home to a remarkable variety of flora and fauna, including friendly squirrels.

The waterfalls and the Black Forest Museum offer two different ways to experience the local highlights in Triberg. At the waterfalls, the focus is on the cascades, trails and observations in nature. At the museum, by contrast, visitors encounter clocks, traditional costumes, woodwork, straw weaving and historic workshops. The two approaches therefore have different focal points.

Culture

The Black Forest Museum in Triberg presents four centuries of Black Forest clocks, regional traditional costumes, woodcarving, straw weaving and historic craft workshops. For the local Triberg Fasnet carnival, the museum displays more than 25 figures from the region’s carnival tradition, including the figures of the Triberg Devils.

Getting around

Triberg is located directly on the Black Forest Railway between Offenburg and Constance. The Black Forest Railway runs for 149 kilometres from Offenburg to Singen am Hohentwiel. The section between Hornberg, Triberg and St. Georgen is considered particularly scenic. Two connected tour options on the Black Forest Railway Adventure Trail start and end at Triberg station. Around 16 stations there focus on the construction and technology of the railway. The 109-kilometre Wasserweltensteig trail begins in Triberg and leads in six stages to Neuhausen am Rheinfall in the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen.

The routes and railway options also reveal a clear range of experiences: the Black Forest Railway connects several towns, the Adventure Trail focuses on stations about construction and technology, and the Wasserweltensteig leads from Triberg through six stages to the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen. Climbing adds another type of activity at the rock formations mentioned above.

Activities

The Teufelsfelsen rocks near Gremmelsbach and the Heidensteinfelsen rocks near Nußbach are open for climbing.

Food and drink

According to local tradition, Black Forest gateau continues to be prepared according to the traditional original recipe in traditional cafés and many restaurants in Triberg. At Landgasthof Lilie, groups of at least ten people can book approximately ten-minute demonstrations of how Black Forest gateau is made in advance.

When comparing hotels in Triberg, you can check travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions separately. These three details provide a clear basis for planning your accommodation without conflating the town’s different highlights: waterfalls, museum, railway line, hiking trails, climbing rocks and Black Forest gateau can all be considered depending on your travel plans.
