Villingendorf offers a variety of attractions, including the fitness and generations park, its network of trails and Fasnet. If you are looking for a hotel in Villingendorf, you can plan your trip around your interests: the park and trails offer specific ways to explore the area, while Fasnet involves annual traditions whose details may change.

Park, Trails and Landscape

The fitness and generations park opened in 2024. It is located next to the sports grounds and can be reached from Wiesenweg to the south or StadionstraĂźe to the north. Parking for the park is available at the SchĂĽtzenhaus and the sports centre. Check local conditions before your visit. A large part of the park is laid out as a wildflower and herb meadow, intended in particular to benefit bees and other insects.

From the higher elevations of the Villingendorf district, the peaks of the Swabian Alb can be seen when visibility is good. The developed network of hiking and walking trails runs through the districts of Villingendorf and Bösingen, including Herrenzimmern; various circular trails explore the area around the village. A section of the Neckar Valley Cycle Route also passes through the Villingendorf district. The options are easy to distinguish when planning: explore the surroundings on foot along hiking, walking and circular trails, or use the section of the Neckar Valley Cycle Route as a starting point for a bike ride. Views of the Swabian Alb depend on good visibility.

Fasnet in Villingendorf

The customary annual Shrove Thursday programme includes releasing schoolchildren and kindergarten children, a children’s Fasnet celebration in the multi-purpose hall and the peasants’ uprising at the town hall, where the new Habermüasler is collected. On Fasnet Monday, the procession starts at the corner of Hauptstraße and Schellenwasen, continues to Mörikeweg and returns to the Gasthof Kreuz, where the Habermüaslertanz takes place. The programme therefore varies by both day and type of event: Shrove Thursday brings together children’s Fasnet and town hall traditions, while Monday features a procession along a specified route and a dance at the Gasthof Kreuz. The customary programme may change, so check the specific Fasnet dates and events before travelling.

Culture and Technology in Rottweil

In Rottweil, the Salinenmuseum Unteres Bohrhaus focuses on the production of evaporated salt. It is presented in original buildings with original equipment, a waterwheel and two brine pumps. The museum also explains the history and significance of the former Royal Saltworks of Wilhelmshall, considered Rottweil’s oldest industrial enterprise. Alongside the historic buildings, the technical equipment used to produce salt is also a central part of the exhibition.

The Dominican Museum combines Roman history with hands-on activities: visitors of all ages can try on a Roman wool tunic and chain mail, handle a Roman soldier’s helmet or shield, and try out a Roman rider’s saddle. Check before your visit whether this activity is currently available. The “Roman Rottweil – Arae Flaviae” section takes visitors through a day in Roman Rottweil on 4 August 186 AD—from the forum in the morning through various public and private appointments to a banquet in the evening. Reconstructions and interactive areas complement the exhibition.

The Rottweil Narrensprung also takes place at a specific time: it begins on Fasnet Monday, when the bells strike 8 a.m., behind the Black Gate. The exact date varies from year to year. The Test Tower offers a different focus. Modern elevators are tested and certified in its twelve shafts, with speeds of up to 18 metres per second. To get to the Test Tower from Rottweil station, take bus 5011 on weekdays; a dial-a-ride bus runs on Saturdays and Sundays. Check the service before travelling.

Visitors interested in Roman history can also follow the Römerpfad in Rottweil’s old town. Information panels along the route describe key sites in the former Roman city. Rottweil thus offers several different ways to explore: exhibitions and interactive areas in the museum, insights into technology at the Test Tower, and historical information along a walking route.
