Neckarbischofsheim: Castle Park, City History and Hiking Trails

Neckarbischofsheim lies among gentle hills on the border between the Kraichgau and the Kleiner Odenwald. Its districts include Helmhof and Untergimpern. You can plan your stay around a range of interests: the castle park, the town’s historic buildings or a hike of a particular distance.

Castle Park and Ancient Trees

Neckarbischofsheim’s castle park covers about 2.6 hectares and surrounds the Old Castle, a picturesque castle pond and a well-preserved Renaissance gate. The arboretum is home to, among others, around two trees that are more than 250 years old. Particularly impressive specimens are identified by information boards. The park thus brings together architectural features and botanical highlights that visitors can discover as they stroll around.

The castle park is also the starting and finishing point for several circular hikes organized by the Odenwald Club Neckarbischofsheim. Historic Buildings and City History

One prominent landmark is the Pentagonal Tower: the 24-meter-high structure is a remnant of the town’s defensive fortifications. Since 1965, the 1448 tower has housed an exhibition on local history. Its collections include boundary stones, fossils and small Roman finds, as well as the furnishings of a farmhouse parlor, objects from crafts and agriculture, and archival materials on the town’s history, club flags and uniforms.

The Historic Old Town Trail includes 25 monuments. Information boards and QR codes complement the stops; visitors can use the codes to access additional information and video clips. Among the buildings with their own stories is the tower of the Protestant town church of “St. Salvator,” built in 1543. The Schmitthenner House is the birthplace of the poet and theologian Adolf Schmitthenner. Alexanderburg was built in the first half of the 16th century and is the birthplace of the poet Karl Mayer and the landscape painter Louis Mayer.

Literary and local-history collections also offer a range of insights: the Adolf Schmitthenner Room in the local history museum contains works by the poets Karl Mayer and Adolf Schmitthenner, who were born in Neckarbischofsheim, as well as paintings by the landscape artist Louis Mayer. The museum also displays artifacts and paintings relating to the history of the town and the Lords of Helmstatt, who ruled the town from the 13th through the 19th century.

Remains of the walls of the Jewish house of worship, built in 1848, can still be seen at Synagogue Square. A memorial stone commemorates its destruction during the November pogrom. Another historic building is the town pharmacy: built in 1824 in the Neoclassical Weinbrenner style, it became a pharmacy in 1881.

Choose Circular Hikes by Distance

Three circular hikes organized by the Odenwald Club Neckarbischofsheim start and finish in the castle park. The “Altenberg” loop follows the NB 4 and is 5.6 kilometers long. “Autenberg” follows the NB 1 and covers 7.3 kilometers. At 18.0 kilometers, “Helmhöfer Forsthaus” on the NB 3 is considerably longer. The Neckarbischofsheim area offers both varied walks and longer hikes that take in neighboring communities. Another option for a day out is the field railway attraction run by the field railway enthusiasts on the outskirts of town, in the direction of Helmhof.
