Dottingen: Church, Hiking, Ski Lift and Gliding
Accommodation in Dottingen
Dottingen offers a range of attractions for a stay: a Late Gothic church, protected countryside, a circular hiking route, winter sports and air sports. Which of these matter for your plans also depends on the time of year. Some activities are expressly available only during limited periods or depend on the weather.
Church, Countryside and Special Places
The Protestant church in Dottingen dates back to 1605 and is Late Gothic in style. It adds a historic touch to the village. The landscape around Dottingen also brings together geological and archaeological features that can be explored as travel interests in their own right, apart from the sporting activities.
The Höhnriß-Neuben nature reserve covers around 50 hectares and extends across the districts of Dottingen and Rietheim. It mainly encompasses all or part of the named Gewanne (traditional agricultural field areas) Eisenrüttel, Neuben, Wiesach and Höhnriß. The name therefore covers several designated areas of land, not just one particular spot.
A substantial basalt deposit lies at Eisenrüttel and is considered a distinctive feature of the Swabian Alb. Some finds from the area, including Celtic burial mounds, are on display at the State Museum in Stuttgart. The site thus connects a geological feature with archaeological finds that are now exhibited elsewhere.
Buchhalde in Münsingen-Dottingen is 866 metres high and is considered the highest elevation in the city of Münsingen. In good weather, the view from there reaches the Alps or even farther into the distance. The view is explicitly dependent on suitable weather conditions.
Hiking and Winter Sports
The circular route “MÜNSINGEN HIKING TOUR 3: Around Eisenrüttel” starts at the Buchhalde hiking car park in Münsingen-Dottingen. It is 5.56 kilometres long, with 130 metres of ascent and 130 metres of descent. The approximate duration is listed as two hours and 15 minutes. These figures help you estimate the time needed for the route without assuming that its difficulty can be determined from the distance alone.
At the edge of the forest in the Münsingen district of Dottingen, there is a ski lift with two runs: a family run approximately 550 to 600 metres long and a steep slope around 400 metres long. Both runs are illuminated. Sledding is permitted free of charge away from the groomed slope in the car park area. The ski lift’s operating hours depend on the weather, so take this into account when planning your schedule.
Air Sports and Seasonal Refreshments
The Münsingen-Eisberg glider airfield is accessible via Reutlinger Straße. The airfield access road is on the K6701 between Münsingen and Dottingen. The Münsingen-Eisberg Air Sports Club invites visitors to experience flying for themselves on a flight with a pilot. This is separate from the training on offer: the club trains its members in gliding, microlight flying, touring motor glider flying and powered flight.
The Fliegerklause serves food and drinks on Sundays and public holidays during the flying season, from April to October. This seasonal offering complements the aviation attractions, but is available only during the stated period and on the stated days. Before your visit, check whether the opening times fit your plans.
When choosing a hotel in Dottingen, you can start by deciding which activities you want your stay to revolve around and when you would like to travel. For a hike, the stated duration is a practical planning guide; for the ski lift, operating hours depend on the weather. A visit to the Fliegerklause is also limited to the flying season, Sundays and public holidays. This lets you assess the different activities according to their actual conditions, without assuming that one applies to the others.
