Unteruhldingen: Pile Dwellings and the Lake Constance Promenade
Accommodation in Unteruhldingen
Unteruhldingen combines archaeological discoveries with a Lake Constance shoreline shaped by its promenade, natural beach, harbours and views. The pile dwelling museum has its own distinct focus. When planning your stay, you can choose between archaeological themes, different ways of presenting them and open views across the lake.
Pile Dwellings and Finds from Two Eras
The Unteruhldingen Pile Dwelling Museum combines a new museum by the lake with original finds from the Stone and Bronze Ages. It also features 23 reconstructed pile dwellings arranged in three villages from two eras. This places archaeological originals and reconstructed houses alongside one another as different ways of exploring the subject. The layout in several villages and two eras gives the architectural section a clear structure: the reconstructed pile dwellings do not represent just a single house, but are arranged in several groups.
The museum also includes the ARCHAEORAMA, a 360-degree underwater presentation. There, visitors take part in a virtual dive to the pile dwellings in Lake Constance. This perspective complements the reconstructed houses and original finds with a digital exploration of the underwater world of the pile dwellings. You can thus gain different perspectives on the same archaeological subject rather than encounter just one way of presenting it.
Tour and Visitor Experiences
A marked visitor route leads through houses from the Stone and Bronze Ages. Museum staff explain the exhibits, and there is also the hands-on ENTDECKER PARCOURS. The route, explanations and interactive experience each offer a different emphasis: you can follow the route, have the exhibits explained or use the trail. Individual interpretive installations may change. If a particular offering is important to you, check what is currently on display before your visit.
Promenade, Natural Beach and Lake Views
The lakeside promenade offers a natural beach, a yacht harbour, a fishing harbour and seating areas. From there, views stretch across Lake Constance to the Alpine panorama. The natural beach also has a beach volleyball court and a playground. This means the shoreline brings together different features: open lake views, harbour areas and places to spend time on the beach. Beach facilities and individual installations along the promenade may be seasonal; take this into account when planning your visit.
Routes on the Uhldingen Time Trail
In the wider destination of Uhldingen-Mühlhofen, two routes on the Uhldingen Time Trail offer different options for planning your visit. The long route is 4.8 km and leads to Unteruhldingen’s main sights and monuments. The western route is 2.5 km, takes about 45 minutes and follows the Ehbach into the Stone Age and to the open-air pile dwelling museum. The western route is therefore the shorter of the two; the long route focuses on Unteruhldingen’s sights and monuments. Check the current signposting locally before setting off.
The route details help you choose a walk that suits your preferred distance: an approximate walking time is given for the western route, while the long route is described by its length and destination area. The museum, shoreline and walking routes each offer a different focus for a stay in Unteruhldingen. Which one matters most to you depends on whether you are more interested in the pile dwellings, the visitor experiences or the Lake Constance shore.
