Heiligenberg: Hiking and Castle History
Accommodation in Heiligenberg
For a trip to Heiligenberg, hiking routes, castle history and seasonal winter sports offer different points of interest. When comparing hotels, base your choice on the activities that matter most to you. Trail lengths make it easy to compare routes; winter sports depend on sufficient snow conditions.
Choose hiking routes by distance
Panorama Trail I is a 13.6-kilometre circular hike through the uplands of Heiligenberg; Panorama Trail II is a 6.4-kilometre loop in the same area. Both trails offer scenic views. At more than twice the length of Panorama Trail II, Panorama Trail I makes it easy to choose based on your preferred distance.
A distinctive landmark for walks is Amalienhöhe: at 788.2 metres, it is the highest point in Heiligenberg. It offers a wonderful panoramic view and is a popular walking destination. The monastery trails offer a different focus. They lead to various religious buildings and viewpoints within the municipality, combining nature and history.
Castle history and culture
Between 1560 and 1575, Heiligenberg Castle was transformed from a late-medieval castle into a Renaissance palace. The castle chapel is an important monument of the German Renaissance and part of the history of the Fürstenberg family. Since 1586, it has served as the family’s burial place. The Knights’ Hall is also part of the castle’s history: it offers views of Lake Constance and the Alpine range.
These historical connections give the area a cultural focus alongside its hiking routes. They span the building’s transformation in the 16th century and the chapel’s function as a burial place over many centuries. From the Knights’ Hall, the view connects the castle and landscape with Lake Constance and the Alpine range.
Things to do throughout the year
The Heiligenberg high-altitude outdoor pool is also shaped by its location: it lies in the Linzgau region at an elevation of 730 metres and offers views as far as the Alps. Winter activities have a specific condition. When snow conditions are sufficient, Heiligenberg offers winter sports, including a downhill slope and ski lift, as well as more than 20 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails. If these activities are important to your trip, check snow conditions in advance.
In the area around Heiligenberg, a hike to Freundschaftshöhle is a special visitor experience in good weather. The hike offers views of the castle and the valley. For music and cinema, the association “Musik & Kultur Heiligenberg” presents a varied programme spanning different styles. Individual performances may change, so check the relevant date before planning a specific visit.
