Wittendorf: Village History, Hiking Trails and Winter Sports
Accommodation in Wittendorf
When looking for a hotel in Wittendorf, you can decide what to focus on during your trip: village history, hiking, cycling or winter sports each offer different activities. The season is also important for planning, as ski operations depend on snow conditions.
Village History and Local History Museum
Wittendorf’s history includes weapon graves from the 6th and 7th centuries and its first documented mention around 1100. The graves therefore date back to centuries before the first written mention—two distinct points of reference for the village’s history.
The local history museum in the Kornspeicher is housed in a historic building that once belonged to Alpirsbach Abbey. The museum displays pictures and objects from village life. Special exhibitions on new topics are held each year. If you are planning a visit for a particular date, check the current exhibition topic.
Hiking and Cycling
The “Wittendorfer Kornäcker” hike starts at the parking lot by the Wittendorf sports ground and follows the yellow diamond trail marker towards Neuneck. After about 500 metres, the route reaches a play and barbecue area beneath a lime tree. The tree also marks the highest point of the circular route; a bench there offers a 360-degree view.
The e-bike route offers a different focus: NPe5 eBike Tour 5, “Rund ums Loßburger Ferienland,” leads uphill from Ursental to Wittendorf and continues into the Heimbach Valley. While the Kornäcker route is marked by the trail, the spot beneath the lime tree and the viewpoint, the cycling tour follows a sequence of locations: Ursental, Wittendorf and the Heimbach Valley.
Winter Sports and Fishing
The Käppele–Wittendorf winter sports area lies at an elevation of 562 to 627 metres. The Wittendorf ski lift is a 400-metre platter lift with a capacity of 600 people per hour. The area’s elevation and the lift’s technical specifications offer different points of reference; operations are seasonal and depend on snow conditions. Check the conditions before your trip if you plan to take part in winter sports.
Recreational fishing at Hubertussee is currently suspended until further notice due to low water levels. Before planning a visit, check whether the suspension is still in effect.
In the wider destination of Loßburg
The source of the Kinzig and Kinzigsee are located in the Zauberland nature area in Loßburg. The natural area around Kinzigsee provides a habitat for many plant and animal species. The Vogteiturm tower is also in Loßburg, on Rodter Höhe: it is 35 metres tall. Climb 172 galvanised steel steps to reach the platform at a height of 31 metres; the tower is open year-round. In good weather, the view extends beyond Loßburg to the Zollernalb.
The trails in Zauberland offer a range of themes. The five-kilometre Augenblickrunde Vogteiturm loop connects the tower and Zauberland via narrow paths. The Wiesenerlebnisrunde is a circular trail just under one kilometre long, with eight information boards about fields and meadows. Introduced in summer 2026, the Bibererlebnispfad runs between Kinzigsee and the source of the Kinzig along narrow paths, passing five information boards about beavers. Children can learn interesting facts about beavers there and hide in a beaver lodge.
For a cycling tour in Loßburg, the Kinzigtal cycle path follows the Kinzig to Alpirsbach; it is possible to return by train. Check the current train connection separately if you plan to make this return journey. This makes it easy to distinguish the options described by interest: Wittendorf’s trails and local history sit alongside the natural attractions and routes of the wider destination of Loßburg.
