Waldachtal offers a local focus on outdoor art, landscape and technological history. The Krabbenweg trail runs through the Cresbach valley; the Mönchhof Sawmill in Waldachtal-Vesperweiler adds a historical touch. Find more cultural and leisure ideas in the larger Freudenstadt destination.

The Krabbenweg: Sculptures and Landscape

Sculptures by Matthias Schweikle stand at nine stops along the Krabbenweg. They explore the behavior and symbolism of corvids. The trail combines an artistic perspective on these birds with a route through the so-called “Krabbenwald” in the Cresbach valley.

The Krabbenweg is around 2.5 kilometers long and runs through the idyllic Cresbach valley on nearly level ground, with relatively few barriers. Its approximate length, described terrain and art stops give the trail a distinctive character. For directions, the hiking parking lot is on the road connecting the Waldachtal districts of Lützenhardt and Cresbach.

Technological History and Cycling

The Mönchhof Sawmill in Waldachtal-Vesperweiler offers a different perspective. It was first mentioned in 1435 as property of Bebenhausen Monastery near Tübingen; its fully functioning saw drive dates from 1903. The two dates refer to different aspects: 1435 to its first mention as monastery property, and 1903 to the saw drive.

Cycling is another consideration when planning a visit around Waldachtal. A network of cycle paths has been inviting visitors to explore the landscape by bike since 2024. The routes are well signposted; check the signs and route details locally before planning your trip.

For a hike starting in Freudenstadt, try the audio-guided Tannenriesen listening tour. The route introduces visitors to the Black Forest’s tallest fir, carpets of moss and scenic views; rustic huts along the way invite you to take a break. The larger Freudenstadt destination therefore offers both urban and leisure activities and an audio-guided exploration of the landscape.

Alpirsbach is also part of the larger Freudenstadt destination. Alpirsbach Monastery, with its imposing monastery church, is one of the few monasteries in southwest Germany preserved according to the principles of the medieval Hirsau Reform. A historical town tour visits historic buildings and includes a stroll through the spa gardens.

The museums in Alpirsbach each have their own focus. The Museum of Local History explains the town’s development through selected collectibles. In the monastery museum, the permanent exhibition “Monks and Scholars” displays garments, letters, drawings, games and vessels from six centuries. This makes it possible to explore local history and monastic life as distinct topics within the larger Freudenstadt destination.
