Discover Owen: Teck, trails and local history
Accommodation in Owen
Owen offers a range of starting points for planning your trip: the Teck, Owen’s local mountain, walking and cycling trails, and insights into local history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Owen, these themes can help you organise your interests for your stay.
Hiking on the Teck
The Teck is a 775 m-high foothill of the Swabian Jura and offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. The Teck Circuit starts at Amtsplatz, one of the most important squares in Owen’s Unterstädtle; the railway station is within sight. The route follows narrow forest paths past the old glider hangar to Gelber Felsen, which offers a view over the Lenninger Valley. Check local conditions before setting out.
The similarly named premium hiking trails can also be distinguished by the places they pass through: “hochgehlegen” connects Beuren, Owen and Erkenbrechtsweiler; “hochgehadelt” runs through Bissingen, Owen and Lenningen. “hochgehlegen” is one of the two premium hiking trails in the “hochgehberge” series listed in Owen. As routes may change, it is advisable to check the latest route details before setting out.
Local history and landmarks
The Historic Town Trail has been in Owen since 2011. It was created in collaboration with the Alt-Owen Förderverein e.V. The history of the Teck is also associated with various dates: the Swabian Alb Association took it over in 1941; in 1955, the castle complex was newly opened up and suitably developed. These dates refer to different stages in its historical development.
The Geschichtshaus tells stories about the plants and animals around the Teckberg, early settlements on the Lauter, Teck Castle and its rulers through to the town’s founding in the 13th century, and life in Owen up to the present day. Marienkirche in Owen was one of the first churches in Württemberg to be built as a Staffelkirche. Large parts of the first known wall paintings in Bernhardskapelle, dating from the 14th century, have been preserved.
Please note the visiting conditions for Bernhardskapelle: it is closed to visitors unless accompanied by a guide. Group tours must be booked in advance through Owen Town Hall. Confirm the arrangements with Town Hall before your visit.
Getting around by bike and on foot
The literary cycling route opened in 2012. It follows the Lauter through Owen and passes the Geschichtshaus. Check local conditions before setting out. This allows you to include it in your plans as a separate cycling route, while the Historic Town Trail offers a different perspective on Owen.
Other local features include two bakehouses: one on TeckstraĂźe and one on AmtstraĂźe. Contact the person responsible for each bakehouse for information about baking there. As contact details may change, check them in advance if you would like to make an enquiry.
The Fitness Circle is on the green space next to Teckhalle. It is freely accessible all day, and the paths are designed to be wheelchair accessible. Access conditions may change, so it is advisable to check before visiting. The information about the Teck Circuit, local history, the cycling route and individual visiting conditions can help you prioritise the things that matter most for your trip.
