Teningen: Sandstone, Local History and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Teningen
Teningen offers two distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: cultural history, such as the Heimbach quarries, and opportunities for exercise and leisure. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether your stay will focus more on architecture and local history, a cycling trip or a visit to the leisure pool. The following themes offer specific points to help you decide.
Sandstone, Art and Local History
The Heimbach quarries are large quarries of Bunter sandstone. From the 14th to the 19th century, their stone was extracted for construction and repair work on Freiburg Minster. This connection makes the stone itself part of the Minster’s architectural history.
St. Gallus Church in Heimbach also reflects several phases of construction: it was rebuilt in the Baroque style between 1747 and 1777, while substantial parts of the earlier Gothic west tower were preserved. The building offers a chance to see both the Baroque redesign and the reuse of older architectural elements.
The Hilla von Rebay House documents the life of the artist and her parents through personal belongings and artworks. Special guided tours are available on request; please inquire before your visit. The Heimbach Mill preserves the local milling tradition to this day. Since 1979, the tithe barn has served as a community centre. Together, these sites offer different insights into art, craftsmanship and public life.
Cycling and Leisure
The Mühlbach Cycling Route passes through Teningen and forms a loop of around 30 kilometres, with a few short climbs and descents. Yellow signposts with blue lettering mark the route; 20 information boards cover mills, power stations and local attractions along the way. This makes it possible to combine a bike ride with information about the places along the route. Check the signposting before setting out in case it has been updated.
Teningen Leisure Pool has a competition pool, partially covered swimming pools, a 70-metre water slide and a diving pool with a diving tower. Facilities may change, so check the latest information before your visit.
To reach the recreational lakes, follow the signs from A5 exit 60 and take the turn towards Bahlingen at the intersection. Check the route before setting out.
The Wider Region: Emmendingen
Across the wider Emmendingen destination, cycling extends beyond the Mühlbach loop: Emmendingen district has 900 kilometres of cycle routes, of which 250 kilometres are signposted. These figures refer to the district. When planning, you can choose between the specific loop through Teningen and the larger regional network of routes.
The cultural history of Emmendingen district also includes Hochburg Castle: its first written mention dates to 1161, and it is one of Baden’s largest castle complexes. The district’s wine-growing areas belong to Kaiserstuhl and Breisgau and cover around 2,300 hectares.
