Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl: Cycling Routes, Swimming Lake and History
Accommodation in Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl
Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl is known as a wine-growing community. Cycling routes around the town pass through vineyards, the Rhine floodplains and a landscape of volcanic rock; there is also a swimming lake and geological and historic sites to explore.
Cycling routes between vineyards and the Rhine floodplains
The cycling routes around Sasbach are well maintained and signposted, and most have no steep climbs. Along the way, vineyards, the Rhine floodplains and volcanic rock come together. West of Sasbach, the Rhine Cycle Route runs through the floodplain landscape. Signposted routes also pass through vineyards behind the town centre, with views across the Kaiserstuhl as far as the Vosges. You can enjoy a variety of landscapes: the vineyards and volcanic scenery on the routes around town, and the Rhine floodplains along the Rhine Cycle Route.
Swimming lake in the Rhine floodplains
Sasbach’s swimming lake is in the floodplain forest near the sports facilities and can be reached on foot or by bicycle. It covers 11 hectares, of which 2.2 hectares are designated as a swimming area. Large sunbathing lawns offer space to relax and picnic. A child-friendly shallow-water area complements the designated swimming area. The lake is freely accessible all year round. Check the municipality’s latest notices before your visit.
Geology and history at Limberg
The Limberg Scientific Educational Trail is 6.2 kilometres long. The municipality of Sasbach and the district of Emmendingen established it in 1977. The trail leads to quarries and geological outcrops where the rocks and geological features of Limberg are explained. More than 90 information panels cover volcanism, wine, forests, water and history. The trail also reaches the remains of an ancient Celtic rampart. Geological explanations and archaeological traces can therefore be encountered along the same route.
The buildings in the town offer a different historical focus. The pilgrimage chapel on Litzelberg was built in the 17th century and substantially extended in 1752, giving it its present appearance. St Martin’s Church in Sasbach was consecrated in 1749.
Winegrowing, festival and getting there
The Sasbach winegrowers’ festival takes place every two years in mid-August. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the latest events calendar in advance. This lets you combine an event celebrating winegrowing with excursions to the cycling routes, swimming lake or Limberg, without making your stay about just one thing.
Sasbach has its own railway station and good public transport connections. Check the latest timetables to plan your journey. Whether you explore the vineyards and Rhine floodplains by bicycle, spend time at the swimming lake, or are interested in geology and local history, these destinations offer a variety of reasons to plan a stay in Sasbach.
